Hello All. I'm sure this question belongs in the Equipment section, but I didn't see anything specific to Mutes. So my apologies if I'm in the wrong place. I have a standard mute that came with my trumpet. Does the job to muffle for a quiet practice session. It's tinny & kazoo like, but for quiet practice, that's ok. What I'm looking for is a Mute under $100, that will still give me a full trumpet sound, but just sound as if there were a volume knob on the horn & I turned it down. (Hope I'm explaining that right). Is there such an animal? Thanks!!! |

Unfortunately that kind of mute just doesn't exist. Your best bet would be some sort of sound-proofed box you can place your bell into that will dampen the sound. There may be some things like that available for purchase, or you could get an egg crate and line it with sound absorbing material if you think you could find a decent way to suspend it somewhere. There is something called a "Mute Tube" on the market that would likely achieve something close to what you want but they're quite expensive. _________________ Andrew Stadler |

Hi & thanks. I should have started off with this explanation. I'm going to play at an affair in a small party room in a restaurant, & do not want to disturb anyone in the restaurant outside of this room; & yet not sound too tinny. Anything like that out there? Thanks again. |

Mute discussions are normally held in the “other toys” forum. There are a lot of discussions on practice mutes in that forum and they might help you.
If you decide to search use a major search engine not this forum’s search feature. Limit the search using site:trumpetherald.com. |

Sounds like you might want to purchase a bucket mute.
This is what I own.

I think my offerings give the player a lot of choices in sound color, some for much less than $100. The deluxe salt shaker may offer you the sound you are after.

I’d second the suggestion of a bucket. My favorite would be the Eazy bucket: https://www.theeazybucket.com/
Easiest mute to mount, great sound and intonation.
Or get a flugel? With a fitting Eazy Bucket? _________________ 2019 Martin Schmidt eXcellence

The classic Humes & Berg bucket mute will give you the result closest to what you've requested. Keep in mind that it is available for typical bell diameters (4.5" - 4.75") and also for larger bell diameters (5") so you need to be certain you buy the correct one to fit your bell. _________________ HERMOKIWI |

Hello Gentlemen. Thank you for all your suggestions. I'm also looking at a 30TC Straight Copper End Trumpet Mute. Got good reviews. Any information on that? Thanks guys!! |

That's a nice straight mute. I find that the copper bottom helps with projection while still blending well with all-aluminum mutes. Just in case you aren't aware, the Tom Crown corks are quite thick and intended to be shaved/filed considerably to play properly. You want to make sure the corks are filed to the point where you can get the low F# to slot well and the rest of the notes are reasonably in tune (bearing in mind that straight mutes typically play sharp).
Another mute to consider is the TrumCor copper bottom straight mute. I've come to prefer the TrumCor mute to the Tom Crown mute, but would have no qualms about using the Tom Crown anytime.
I'd say that the most popular copper bottom mute is the Denis Wick. While I would take the TrumCor, Tom Crown, (and Soulo copper bottom) mutes over it, the Denis Wick gets the job done just fine. |

Hello All. Picked up the Thomas Crown 30TC. A great sound from it. Doesn't distort tone into sounding like a kazoo. It lowers the sound as if you heard someone playing say in the next room if I can describe it in that way. I did have to shave the corks though. Anyone else using this mute? Thanks!! |
