I have a Strad #80XX, which puts the date of manufacture in ‘48-49?, but the bell is clearly stamped “Mt Vernon”. Was this horn made in the Bronx with a bell stamped Mt Vernon? Was the bell added later as a replacement for the original?

I'd guess it was replaced. I have a 1965 37 bell lacquer Strad cornet that was shop card April 15th 1965 sn#30836, very early Elhhart. It was suggested that tooling and some Mt. Vernon parts were used on early Elkharts. My bell indicates Elkhart. I'd be curious if it might have inherited some unstamped parts and or bell SN# 30836.
It's new old stock never sold until I bought from family that owned their music store for 85 years and their heirs sold the store and some new old stock instruments including a Martin guitar. My own holy grail time capsule that plays great.

80XX is a series that is split between late 1940 for the first 14 serials, and then the rest are Spring 1948. In all cases, the 1953 Mt. Vernon facility did not exist yet, so the bell would be a replacement.
