Wynton trumpet grip

Has anyone tried (or even care to) play with the index finger over the bell? I’ve heard Chris Botti tried and liked it but I’ve seen some concerts and he is not doing that. Wynton may have longer fingers than me but it’s not that comfortable for me.

Anyway, the way I hold the instrument is starting to hurt my index finger (I know suck it up) just wondering. The way I hold the trumpet (the right way) 😆 is index finger under the bell, middle finger, ring finger in the 3rd valve ring and pinky wrapped around the ring. That leaves an indention on my index finger and is uncomfortable.

I’ve tried changing to index finger and middle finger through the ring and ring finger and pinky underneath 3rd valve slide. Well, guess what. The ring finger is uncomfortable and leaves an indention on my ring finger.

Any suggestions?

It could be the wrap of the horn.

I have some vintage Getzens, and the wrap is narrow ... (and, I don't have large hands); but, I find it comfortable.

On-the-other-hand ( lame pun), my early Conn Constellation 28A (long cornet) has a well known wide wrap, which I find comfortable, also.

Have you tried other horns?

I have not tried any other horns. I’ve had this since elementary school. Bach Strad ML

The former heavyweight World Champion boxer / prize-fighter, Sonny Liston (deceased) was well-known to have uncommonly large hands and fists.

I wonder how he might have held a trumpet ?
