I played a 1000 today which I liked but would really like to try a 1001. Beside bore difference, are there any other differences between these 2? And is there any consensus on one being more desired than the other? If you have played both, which did you prefer and for what reason? And any input/opinions on how the Kanstul Burbank horns compare?

I have a 1001, and have never played a 1000. Really like the sound of a 1001.

I've only briefly played the Kanstul Chicagos at a convention years before I acquired my Benge. I didn't really care for them.

My Benge though, is magic. It's got some flaky intonation (at the normal Benge places) and it hates having dampen it's resonance - like it's own stop rod assembly. But, it really sings in a way that most trumpet do not.

I have taken the third slide stop contraption off of my Benges and Bach (lightweight) trumpets. To me that alone improved them a great deal.
The blow relaxed, intonation is better and the sound brightened up.
I've been through all of the heavy valve caps and all of that stuff and always find that reducing weight makes horns resonate better and blow more open.
I have an inherently dark sound, though.
Anywho, I have a 1973 Benge 6x that I adore and a 1964 Benge 5x that I love.
The Burbanks and Kanstul copies I've had opportunities to play are ok, but nothing like late 60s - early 70s Benges. (Or Chicago Benges)

Over the years I have played a lot of horns - including the Kanstul Chicago models and Benges. I have found that I prefer the 1000. But that may have been based on the individual horns I have played. As a rule, I prefer Benges over the Kanstul version. My favorite horns have been early LA 3X or 5X models. I have played some amazing Burbank Models - including a 3X + model that was superb. I haven't played a lot of Chicago Benges but there are some amazing Chicago Benges out there as well.

If you can find a Precursor to the Benges - a prewar French Besson in excellent shape, like the ones restored by Josh Landress, you can find some amazing horns.

I've got a 1001, and have played a couple of Benges.

I like the 1001 as it's a more open horn to play than the smaller bore version, and that's what I prefer - others might prefer the tighter nature of the 1000.

The intonation can be an issue, but one that can be worked around. The 1001 is a bright horn (and was marketed as such), and really has some zip to the sound.

I love it!
