I'm looking for some solos to do with a community band I play in.

On the Flugel, I'm looking at doing Rodrigo's Adagio from Concerto d`Aranjuez. ( Brassed Off) since I finally found a concert band version of it..

What other solos do you like for Concert Band? Would love to find something Dixieland or Jazz ( Improv) to play with the band .. Needs to be about Grade 3 or 4 for the Concert Band..

Thanks,
Kevin

How bout one of the Clarke or Arban solos ? You can even get the entire collection of band and solo parts off of Marty Schmidt on eBay for around $ 4.00. He has "Carnival" (Clarke's version) and "The Debutante" both of which I have played with concert band from his copies. He also sells a nice version of "Ave Maria" for concert band.

Check out Wynton's "Carnaval" album. All of those pieces are either available for purchase or hire.
How about "Trumpeter's Lullaby" by Leroy Anderson? Not too difficult and a great piece for showing off your melodic playing.

Kevin, Gail did a flugel piece with Callenwolde a while back. Sounded pretty good. I'll let you know what it was tonight.

ASEmaster,
OHH by the way .. What piece do you want to do with the Sawnee Band?
I've convinced Alice that all the Advanced Players in the band need a chance to Solo if they want too..

Also to answer my own Question.. I found a nice arrangment for Cornet & Concert Band:
I'VE MADE MY PLANS FOR THE SUMMER
John Philip Sousa/Brion & Schissel
C L Barnhouse Music Company

Its' arranged for voice & band but the solo can be played on Cornet & it sounds great..
Here is a snip-it from it : http://www.jwpepper.com/ram/2378917.ram

I'll have to think about it. There are a few I've enjoyed doing & would like to do again. Also one for stage band that would take some rearranging for concert band.

Kevin,

Where did you find the Rodrigo? Is it published or manuscript? I've been looking for it also.

The Lang version of the Vivaldi is POP, but there are so many copies of it out there that you might be able to get it through inter-library loan. Southern Music has a version of it in C major available for rental. I have a copy of the score and it looks like a good version.

Have you considered any of the picc solos with band? I just did Jan Bach's arrangement of the Tartini Concerto in D Major on our last tour. He also did an arrangement of the Brandenburg! I just found a nice arrangement of the Fasch Concerto in D in our library.

Stars in a Velvety Sky and The Debutante are my 2 favorite cornet solos with band aside from Napoli and Carnival. The Rose Variations would sound nice on cornet.

Try contacting any of the Army band librarians in Georgia to see if they might be able to loan you a concert band solo.

Take care, Bill

The reason I would love to do the Vivaldi is that ASEMASTER(Bill) & I both have piccs & D trumpet & know we would sound great on this piece.. He & I are always looking for any excuse to play our piccs or higher trumpets.. Just ask the Piccolo's who helps them play the solo in "Stars & Stripes"

Thanks for the info about asking some of the Military bands, I hadn't thought of that

When did we EVER need an excuse other than we wanted to?

Here is another one. I've been working on Arban's "Variations on a Theme from Norma" (Casta Diva) by Bellini. God is it gorgeous. Get ahold of the Gerald Schwartz recording if you can. Magnifico !!!!!! As are all of Gerald's recordings.

The 2 (arguably) greatest cornet solos ever composed are Willow Echoes by Frank Simon and The Carnival of Venice, either the Arban version or the Staigers version. Clarke's version is also very good and easier to play than Arban or Staigers.
