I'm in a class that requires me to a play solo written within the last thirty years. It can be a Sonata, concerto, unaccompanied, etc. I'm looking for something that is around eight to ten minutes long but length is not a huge issue. I would prefer to play something written for Bb or C trumpet. A few Ideas have already crossed my mind but I'm looking for recommendations so if you know of anything please let me know.

Thanks, Will

The Eric Ewazen Trumpet Sonata might be a good choice. Have you thought about using that one? It is very nice.

I have just acquired Derek Bourgeois' Sonata for Trumpet, that might suit the bill.

There are other pieces that I would recommend, but unfortunately they are sitting in my case, in the car, ready for the days playing and teaching. I will return later and add to my single contribution. You have been warned

Thanks, I have thought of the Ewazen Sonata and it is a very strong candidate. However, I am hoping to hear of a piece that I personally don't know. So keep the ideas coming.
Thanks-
Will

There is this fantastic piece called "Nightsongs" that goes back and forth between flugel and trumpet. It's like 11 minutes long, one movement with 5 sections. I just know I'll get flamed for this, but I can't remember who wrote it! James Thompson recorded it on the 2003 ITG CD, might be able to find the composer on a list of songs. It's very pretty, lots of jazz influences. Hope this helps.

For what it's worth, I too love the Ewazen Sonata. Gotta love that 2nd movement!

Nightsongs - Richard Peaslee
Composed for the New York studio musician Harold Lieberman in 1974.

(just found a CD with it on!)

If you are looking for a very playable Concerto that almost nobody has heard of, check out the Malcolm Arnold. This has been one of my favourites for years, yet bery few players seem to know it. A great shame.

Walked into Phil Parkers and picked it up - amazed, something useful in that shop

It is published by Brasswind and is available from many music shops, if you ask nicely

I would love to recommend their own website, but they seem to be very slow in setting it up (it has been about to start up for the past two years!), as it is I would take a visit to June Emerson Wind Music - http://www.juneemerson.co.uk/ - it isn't currently in their catalogue, but they are usually able to get anything you ask for.

Animal Ditties by Anthony Plog..... Sonata by Kent Kennan...there's also an unaccompanied piece that is very strange called "Concoctions" or something like that... I'm not sure who wrote it though... but somebody on the TH should know.

The above post referrs to "Concoctions" for solo trumpet by John Cheetham. He is professor of theory/composition at the University of Missouri-Columbia.
