I did a search on Google to find information on this topic and it directed me to TH. So, I did a search here on TH, but can't find the thread where it was originally discussed.

Can someone direct me to where this Topic was covered in past?

In relation to what trumpet? It was discussed for both Bach and Olds recently.

Steve,

No particular horn in mind, I was just wondering what the "General" concensus or preference was to either one. I've played horns with both types. I like the idea of metal (brass) guides for "wearability", BUT they make the valves a little noisier. The nylon guides are definately quieter, BUT I'm not sure how they stand up to the test of time.

I once did this gig with a guy who had an older model Bach. We used "clip-on" style mics and this guy's horn was horrible. The mic picked up the "clanking" noise so bad they couldn't directly clip the mic to his bell. They ended up clipping it to his stand in front of him and he had to play into it that way.

Thanks for asking!

It is hard for me to hear the difference. I have a friend who is offering to change my metal guides for plastic ones and my rubber valve button bumpers for felt. I think this is just one of those things where the differences are so small that it does not really matter for most people.

I have instruments with both. I don't really notice the difference.

If you find the metal guides noisy, I have found that a bit of thick slide grease on the guide helps keep it quieter.

For some reason I like the feel of the metal guides on all my Bach Strads. Not sure I hear a difference but something feels more secure. Maybe it has to do with the position of the moon. The gravitational pull is more evident with the metal guides!

MLockman,

Welcome to TH! Hey, I'm a ridge-runner too. I was born and raised a few mountian ranges east of you in a town called, Altoona (Home of the "Big Red Machine" marching band of Altoona High School). Are you a native Heinz57 or an import?

I tried the brass guides in my Schilke B1 and didn't care for them. I switched bach to the nylon.
