Who here has had this done and who would you recommend?
Vertical or horizontal or both?
I have a Bach 43 and a Kanstul ksb102 I was thinking about sending off. |

You might try a search as many have discussed their experiences with various professionals.
The biggest name currently seems to be Wayne Tanabe at The Brass Bow for a PVA (Precision Valve Alignment).
Others include Bob Malone, although he does not personally do it I don't think, and some have had bad experiences with them.
I hear the PVA is worth every penny .. I'm about to send a couple horns for it. _________________ Bb - Yamaha Xeno 8335RGS

I'd just like to put in my two cents on this issue. If I were to send a horn off to anyone for just about anything, one of the top names on my list would be Wayne Tanabe. I know Wayne and you will be hard pressed to find a more qualified tech or nicer guy out there. |

I had one done on my B-flat horn a couple years ago and it turned a dog of a horn into a decent horn that has survived 6 years of playing. Definitely go with the vertical alignment. It is usually the alignment that is off the most. A quick way to see how far your horn is out of alignment is to take off the first valve slide and depress the first valve. How much overlap of the valve is there where the holes should line up? That will give you a very basic idea. I will also offer my good experience with Mr. Tanabe and the Brass Bow. They are great. _________________ Matt Cyr

I'd say get what the expert you're trusting and paying says you need.

I suggest sending it to Wayne Tanabe at the Brass Bow. I sent my old Strad to Bob Reeves a few years ago to get the valves aligned, and when they sent it back, they didn't package the trumpet well at all, and it got beat up terribly on the way back. The box was only half full of peanuts, and the trumpet wasn't wrapped properly in bubble wrapping. Both my 3rd slide and my 2nd valve were jammed and had to be fixed at the local repair shop. After the horn was fixed it played wonderfully, but I don't think I should of had to pay 30 bucks to get it fixed after paying $200 to get it aligned in the first place. I met Wayne Tanabe a few months back when he visited my college, and he was a very intelligent man who put quality at the forefront. If I am ever going to get my new V1 aligned, it's going straight to him. |

I have a Schilke B5 that has a Bob Reeves alignment - very nice. I also played a Burbank Benge 3X for a while and had Brian Seehafer rebuild/lap/align the valves. That was perhaps the best valve setup/action/horn response I have ever experienced. _________________ Best Regards, Play Well!! |

A bit redundant but Wayne has done three of my horns and I could not be happier. _________________ Philip Satterthwaite

One process you don't hear much about any more is Don Novy's "mis-alignment" valve alignment. This is the company that produces the AAIIRR-Power Acousti-coils. But he also used to do valve alignments based an a calculated mis-alignment of the valves. This required a permanent change in the valve stem length which was a little scary. But it actually worked and was equal to conventional alignments -if not a little better. I cornet he did for me 10 years ago is still one of my favorites. |
