I know there are many similar threads out there so forgive my repetition.
I was wondering if you all can help me in my school search. I am currently a junior and planning on majoring in preformance. My main passion right now is orchestra playing but i also enjoy jazz so strong programs in both would be a plus. My main concern for my undergraduate degree is going to a college with a great teacher. I have been a student of Pat Harbison and studying the Adam thnking for a bout two years, so I would like to continue on with a teacher with similar thoughts about playing. (though i am open to other similar thinkings, ie. Chicago School)
Some that i have been considering making a visit to are:
IU (study there and visit regularly)
Arizona State (anyone know what school of playing Dave Hickman teaches?)
Oklahoma
Eastman (Is Thompson producing good students?)
Where else should i consider making a visit to? Who teaches there, and what is there style of teaching? How are the ensembles?
I appreciate any help that you all can give me. The search for colleges, as a many of you know, is overwhelming. _________________ Don't practice until you get it right, practice until you can't get it wrong.

Oberlin (spelling) in Ohio has a great reputation. I am not certain of the faculty there.
Manhattan School of Music has a pretty cool reputation too. |

for undergrad UW Eau Claire is an excellent place. Robert Baca is an Abam student and is a fantastic jazz/lead player but is even better at classical/orchestral. He plays in many of the Broadway shows that come through Minneapolis/ St. Paul. He directs a couple of jazz bands at UWEC, the top one has won numerous Downbeat Best College Big Band awards in the past several years. Their top players have been know to go on to IU, Eastman, Manhattan School of Music, and the like for grad work. Baca is great and the price is right. It's worth a look. |

Check out University of Missouri-Kansas City. The Conservatory there is wonderful. Dr. Keith Benjamin is a fabulous instructor. Their jazz progam is great, with Bobby Watson and Hal Melia. Give them a look, well worth it. |
