I just got off the phone with Langston Fitzgerald. Fitz is the Trumpet Professor at Penn State University. He was a member of the Baltimore Symphony since the 1970-71 season.
I joined the Baltimore Orchestra in 1965, I left the year Fitz joined the orchestra.
Wow...........time flies.
Yeah Billy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just to satisfy everyone's (mine) curiosity, what horn did Billy use to win the audition?
(We all know the principal player uses M*n*tt* horns)

So, just out of random curiosity, about how many profesional orchestras use Monettes (or at least a player does?)
Boston, Baltimore....?

Doesn't the section have to conform to the sound of the first, which would make them switch to similar horns? _________________ ~Annie

It makes it really difficult in the violin section when the concertmaster brings a strad. Oh well, gotta match sounds.... |

Two of the greatest second trumpet players I know of are Nat Prager and Seymour Rosenfeld. Prager played everything on a Bb Besson while Vacchiano played almost every permutation of a C or D trumpet known to mankind.
Seymour used a Bach bell on a Besson horn or vice versa.
Trumpet sections don't have to play the same equipment.
If it sounds great............it's great.

Fitz is in his second year as Professor of Trumpet at Penn State.
He took a year's leave from Baltimore and decided to stay at the university.
Sounds like they have a good program at PSU.

Mr. Wise;
i know this is off the the topic, but are you still playing with the Brookly philharmonic?
i just checked their website, and the principal spot says TBA.
I heard you were a great influence on many trumpet players including Wynton Marsalis. |

I stepped away from the principal chair after being there for thirty- two years.
I feel great now, but last year I did not physically feel first trumpet strong. The orchestra needed a healthy principal trumpet
I have survived a bout with cancer, but I didn't bounce back as quickly, or as fully as my buddy Clark Terry. However, this year, without the stress of the season in Brooklyn, I am almost ready to get back into things.
Heck..........I've got the Kanstul M-B4s P and the M-C4s P. Maybe I'll give the New York Philharmonic a call:-}

I'm glad you are doing well Mr. Wise, and I know that you'll live for a very long time.
So are you planning to audition for the Associate principal spot in the NY phil?? |
