I'm not Monette bashing, I'd just really like to know what a better deal would be on a horn under $5K, or eventually $6K-$7K, which is probably where this one will end up.
I know much of this has been asked before, but since a Monette is once again on the auction block, I just thought I'd ask.

Hi,
If that's the sort of thing you're after try a Taylor Chicago II Standard (not the custom, and make sure it's the new one with the one piece lead pipe).
Regards

Now 36Olds, that's cold man; and I'm a fan of Olds horns. At least you could have said Mendez or Recording, but Ambassador?

Granted, my recommendations are taken with a grain of salt considering who I am, but just hear me out.
There are three trumpets we have that are very similar. The Getzen Genesis (as noted above), the Edwards Gen X, and the Edwards Gen III. All great trumpets and all similar designs. However, they are all well under $5000. A new Gen X is $3500, a great deal considering that's with gold plating. A Genesis is around $3000 depending on the dealer you go with (also gold plated). The Gen III pricing is not set yet, but it will probably fall between $2500 and $3000. You can get more info on the Gen II and Genesis by visiting our websites.

Plus, don't forget that the Monette is built around our valve section. Why not just go right to the source? Our trumpets might not be exactly what you're looking for, but they certainly warrant a try.

A friend of mine picked Edwards Gen X over a Monnette, plays it with Monette mouthpieces, and its extremely happy. Part of his rationale was this: "If I buy the Edwards and don't like it, I can send it back and buy the Monette. If I buy the Monnette and dont like it, I'm screwed."

From the reviews I've read, I suspect that an Eclipse would be of comparable quality, or that one could have an Eclipse conversion completed on any pro horn and have an absolutely killer instrument ... either way, your investment could be well under $5K.
But what do I know?

It depends on your concept of trumpet-sound. For most of us, almost any horn is superior to any Monette, BUT for those that prefer that Monette sound, there's no substitute. No offense meant, just the facts.

ARB,
I had to say Ambassador. I Have recently acquired a like new 1950 Ambassador and have not played my Mendez since! Also for Getzen's sake, I have a Super Deluxe Tone Balanced trumpet and cornet, both from the 50's that are on the top of my list. The smaller bell with the ml bore is a cool combo and plus it's all about the copper! (tone ring!).
Regards,
Phil |

Thanks for the praise, although I would be interested to hear what you think about a Getzen built in the last 5 years or so. To be honest though, I love the old Super Deluxes too. I have several. One of which was the first Getzen trumpet I ever played.

A Harrelson modified trumpet costs much less than a Monette and there are more than 100 pros that agree they play just as well if not better. You can try our horns at this years ITG conference in Denver. Or request a demo horn for a free 1-week trial.
