I'm seriously looking into have my brand new Olds Recording '52 LA overhauled at the Eclipse Workshop. I'll probably have it gold plated with both scrath and polished.

I taught of have the bell + leadpipe+ valve cap (top and bottom) + to end of valve slide with poslished gold and the rest scratched gold. I'll probably ask to add a 1st valve slide thumb hook.

Has anyone has had his Olds horn restaured and plated?

Any comments, thing to suggest? What do you think about it?

I have had Olds horns overhauled by Leigh and just took 3 more down today. You'll have superb horns at the end of it, guaranteed! This is a Special he did for me last year: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=16214&item=3711415722

WELL, one of the beatiful things about the Recording is the Red Brass Bell and leadpipe, the yellow brass and nickle highlights. Certainly, Leigh can do a fantastic overhaul, but I'd suggest the orginal finishes.

I know that it will be a loss if the red brass doesn't appears anymore, but the bell still remains made of rose brass. So the sound isn't changed. The gold plated patern with polished and scrath that I have in head will still give a kinda same style look.

No no no, please don't do that to a beautiful Olds Recording; these horns are stunning just the way they are. I think doing anything other than bringing it back to its former self would be a shame.

Sorry, this is just my humble opinion.

I had my Olds Recording recently refurbished by Leigh in it's original finish. Beautiful to say the least. If you would like a picture let me know.

im gonna say that i agree with the others. the recording is one of the best horns out there and one of the most beautifull.

imho this is fantastic http://horntrader.com/showpix3.asp?ItemCode=3042

and this isnt so attractive http://horntrader.com/showpix3.asp?ItemCode=3142 even though it looks well done, and might be better than the other one.

i think the recording is a bit like the early committiees, everyone wants the one with the water keys we know, and not the same model with normal water keys.

its all peorsonal opinions i think, sam

Rich Ita overhauled my Olds Recording about 6 months ago, he stripped and polished it and it is beautiful. Most people think it’s lacquered because it’s still shinny some six months or so later. The only change has been the beautiful deepening of the golden colored bell, sweet!!!!!

I love the look of this horn; it's like a piece of art.

I could probably see plating the brass parts of the horn with brushed gold but I wouldn't plate over the lovely rose brass colour of the bell. Maybe you could have a scratch lacquer finish done on the bell and brushed gold with bright silver accents on the body of the horn - I think that might be nice.

I am eventually going to have mine redone including having the valves replated but the farthest I would lilkely go is relacquering. Mine's in raw brass now and I like it just fine without lacquer but I figure it will preserve the horn better with some lacquer on it. Or maybe buy another one to try finishes on.

After realising that the price weren't in Euro but in Sterling pound, I made the choice of only having it overhauled and relaquered!

Good choice, you'll thank yourself later, especially if you ever (which I probably will never do) plan to sell it in the future. Good luck. I'm sure it will be beautiful.

Great decision, Welk. You won't regret it. Those horns with rose brass/ yellow brass/ nickel metals and with a clear lacquer that allow the "soul" of the metal to show through always hold the eye. Silver is "a dime a dozen". Take a look at the pictures of Leigh's "Eclipse Special Edition" at http://www.trumpetmaster.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=1120 if you don't believe me. You just can't BUY that kind of beauty any more.

(Well, you can... but you gotta get Leigh to do it!)
