I have an audition for a youth orchestra coming up soon and i have some questions...

What trumpet is normally used for the leonore calls and the 4th mvt. of Cappriccio Espagnol, C or Bb? Same question about American in Paris, C or Bb?

What kind of mute do you use on Fetes? What key of trumpet is fetes written for?

these are the only questions i have right now, but there will be more.

Let's see! In order of appearance:

Leonore - You can use either a C or Bb. Whichever one gives you the necessary edge
and brilliance to cut from backstage. I personally use a C for both #2 and #3. The
important thing to remember about these calls is to have a very clear tone and, if
they have you play the repeat, the second time is slightly louder than the first.

Capriccio - Same as Leonore. Whichever you are most comfortable with. I prefer
the Bb for this fanfare. I gives a more "bullfightish" kind of sonority. Make sure you
play the dynamics and accents exactly as printed.

Gershwin - Bb all the way!! In the slow solo, don't be afraid to slide around a little and bend pitches. In the faster solo, work it up both swung eighths and straight. If you play it one way and they want to hear it the other, they'll ask you.

Fetes (3 Nocturnes) - You need an extremely quiet mute. I think every section out
there has a different notion as to just what mute to use. I use a Trumcor Lyric mute.
However, just recently I picked up a Bach plastic mute and with a few cotton balls
in it, it's even quieter. The parts are written for Trumpet in F.

I strongly suggest you pick up a copy of "Top 50 Orchestral Audition Excerpts for
Trumpet" by Philip Norris. It has all this info plus alot more. It's available through
Crown Music Press. Good luck!

Paul

Trum-Cor makes a wonderful straight mute that is perfect for Fetes!

In North America, most people will play the Leonore calls on C trumpet. Ditto Capriccio Espagnol. Gershwin is more up in the air, but you will find an awful lot of people playing that on C trumpet as well, particularly in an audition.
