Very nice. I just picked off a 1938-39 version on eBay... with the first valve saddle and the brace on the tuning slide, no third valve slide stop though. It's the third one I have had and it's the best. I believe that one was a mid 50's version and the other early 60's. I like this one from the thirties best. The Supers seem to be going up in value. I don't know why, but I got lucky. They are nice horns and very nice looking. |

That surely puts the "Old" in OLDS!!
I bet it plays really nicely ... he even had the valves replated!
Someone will be getting a gem! _________________ Bb - Yamaha Xeno 8335RGS

Hi Dan,
After seeing the pics of that Olds trumpet I got a bit of a tear in my eye. I sold my '69 Recording a couple years ago. I still miss it every once in a while.
I need to get another Olds in my collection. I have a couple of '50s Olds cornets. They are built great and easy to play. _________________ Dan Burton

I've got an Olds Special from that same period (78xx) that I plan to have overhauled at some point. Since the Super came out before the Special in Olds' line, I think mine may be an "earlier example" of its model, if that makes any sense. I have yet to find any reasonably definitive information as to what was the first Olds Special, serialwise...

Hi.
I've also decided to put my Olds Super up for sale. I will also post it in the Marketplace; I hope I don't offend anyone by mentioning it here. It is also a 1933 Olds Super, serial number 7746. It is all original, never been overhauled, never had anything done to it as far as I can tell. The lacquer is slightly darker than on that horn, as you'd expect. It is in incredible condition, with a rich full sound and amazingly fast and tight valves. It includes the original case in absolutely pristine condition; the leather is unmarked and it also has the canvas cover. Upon receipt of the horn I decided not to use the case at all for fear of wrecking it; I've been using a King case instead. The horn has a couple tiny dings in the bell but other than that, it is perfect. There is some lacquer loss on the underside and side of the leadpipe, where your thumb goes, but overall it looks fabulous. No dents, patches, scratches or anything. The valves are great. It has the adjustable first and third slide ring and saddle. The only reason I am selling is that I recently overhauled a '56 Holton Stratodyne and it plays slightly darker, (rose brass bell) which is more in tune with what I'm looking for. I'd really love to keep it, but I have $770 in both horns so I can't afford both. I paid that exact amount for it (off of the TH) and that is what I'm asking - $770 US. If anyone is interested, send me an email. I have some pics for people to see here: http://f2.pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/livertwist/album?.dir=/1933+Olds+Super&.src=ph&store=&prodid=&.done=http%3a//f2.pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/livertwist/my_photos
Make sure you copy and paste the whole address if the above link doesn't work. I would be happy to send larger and more detailed photos to anyone interested (including ones of the slides, valves, etc). I prefer Paypal, but a money order/cert. check is fine too. Also, any and all questions are welcome and will be answered promptly and thoroughly. Thanks,
Oliver |

Beautiful horn there. With all the original paperwork, case, and case cover, I would have thought it would be worth more than that to a collector. You may do better trying on Ebay with all of those pictures...

The Super Olds on ebay you refer to is mine, and it is a beauty. I'm really not happy about selling it, and am going through some serious seller's remorse at the moment.
Please let me know if any of you have any questions about it.
It truly does play like a dream, but I find I'm playing my MC and my cornets more and the Super less. _________________ Scott Henry

Thanks. I've been lurking for months, but only joined yesterday when I saw my horn being discussed.

Let me say this. My section leader got an Olds as his first trumpet and one of the better players in the section has an Olds Silver trumpet and it is pretty cool too. |

I saw a msg from Dan about the Olds Special. My previous Olds horn was a Special with the serial number 7125, with an estimated production date of 1932. I emailed a picture to Alan Rouse at Olds Central, and he told me at that time (2001) that it was the earliest Special he had heard of.
It had a bend in the bell, and the Super played better for me, so I sold it on ebay for about $250, if I recall correctly. _________________ Scott Henry
