They all play pretty much the same, the finish is just a matter of preference. I play the rgs, but I bought it before the other finishes were available - which is probably good, otherwise I'd still be trying to decide!

The silver plate is considerably brighter than the lacquer, BUT you can only hear the difference from out front or reflected off a wall or mirror. To me, they play exactly alike and sound alike from the player's perspective. Up close, I prefer the lacquer, since it has less edge and I prefer the look; however, the brilliance of the silver probably makes it a better tool for lead or situations where you need more projection.

Remember, the "edge" that you hear up close disappears after only about 20" and then turns into projection thereafter.

I just bought an rgm, in lacquer. I haven't seen the silver but wanted lacquer since I already have a silver Schilke. Actually, I didn't want the reversed tuning slide. I tested both 8335's in silver and the reversed turning slide didn't seem more responsive or better in tune to me. The rgs was a little heavier. Even though I specifically said I didn't want the rgm, just the regular 8335 with the shotblast finish, Yamaha sent the rgm anyway (for the same price as the regular 8335). Since I don't wait well, I decided to keep it. I'll no doubt adapt to the reversed slide and extra weight.

The horn is beautiful though and actually easier to play than my B6, which surprised me. The shotblast in lacquer looks different than the picture on the Yamaha site. It almost looks like a matte raw brass.

I think that Yamaha's shotblast matte lacquer almost looks ceramic.

I have pictures if someone can tell me how to add them to a message. I tried copying and pasting and that didn't work.

Hey could you send me some? jophst@cox-internet.com .

I believe you have to have them stored on the internet first, then you can reference them in via HTML code to this thread.

I'd love to see how the lacquer shotblast finish looks though .. please send them to me.

Thanks,

Josh

Hey it bounced back ... could you try again and shrink the pictures some. It said the email was over 4 MB ... can't take that size email right now.

Just bought one from Dillon Music thanks to great communication from Joe Gaspar. They have one more in stock also in the Matte lacquer. It costs a couple dollars over $1300 with a Yamaha Double Case which I think is a STEAL!!

I couldn't resist.

Way to go, Josh. Can you post one of those pictures I sent you? We could probably sell a couple more that way

Sure thing! Here they are! I can hardly wait.

I myself prefer this finish to the Matte Silver.

Ask and you shall receive. This was Jeff Mahoney's auction from a few days ago:

I have a 8335 RGM, I love the way the horn plays, but the finish looks like fake plastic up close. It looks good from a distance but im my opinion does not have a true "vintage" matte finish or raw brass look when closely examined. But then again if you buy a horn simply because of the way it looks then there are other more important issues that need to be addressed. I tried a lot of horns but I found the RGM to be the easiest and most consistant to play cleanly and in tune with a sound that will grow on you the more you play it. This horn works great in all playing situations but I will still probably use a Bach 37 on legit gigs simply so I won't have to answer a lot of "leading" questions.

The shot-blast is so even that it looks ceramic to me. You only see that on close examination and, IMHO, there's nothing wrong with that.
