Hello! I am wondering if a pro Getzen Renaissance Trumpet is a good trumpet to buy. Are they good for an intermediate player who has been playing for almost 10 years now? Are they dependable? Please let me know ASAP!! Thank you!! |

This is like asking if a Ford Explorer is a good car. No one can answer this for you.
Have you played the Getzen? If so, how did you like it? If not, why not? _________________ John

Getzen makes quality instruments and are pretty reliable with their quality. If the horn plays well for you then there's no reason not to buy. _________________ I find your lack of faith disturbing. |

Well, I'm inclined to say yes of course. Although, I would rather you buy a brand new horn.
What are you playing now and what type of sound/trumpet are you ideally looking for?

I am playing an Olds right now...I'm not sure what kind of olds it is. I would like to buy an intermediate trumpet that is good for playing in college bands, because I am in my college band here. I also plan to keep playing after college in other bands. |

Kimmerz,
With one or two possible exceptions, I recommend against getting an "intermediate" horn. As a group, these horns look better than student horns, but don't necessarily play better. I think you would be much happier if you got a pro horn instead. If that means waiting a bit or buying used, I think you'd be happier in the long run.
Cheers,

The Getzen Renaissance is an excellent trumpet. I purchased one of the last "new ones" a couple of months ago - its the happiest I have been with a trumpet in years. I prefer more open blowing instruments so I went with the .464 bore. Add a Kanstul adjustable tuning slide brace and a mouthpiece weight if you want the trumpet to be more "Bachish" in sound and projection - without these additions, the sound reminds me of the 60's Eterna (maybe a tad darker) which is also quite nice for certain work. |

Well, if you are looking for an intermediate trumpet I'd suggest the Getzen 700S. It is a great trumpet for the money. There have been several posts on the TH from players both surprised and pleased at how well the horn plays considering it's cost. In fact, there was a thread reviewing a Xeno I believe that said that a 700 played better than the Xeno that was tried.
Although, as I have said before, I am a bit biased on this issue. I have to go with my good old stand by response of trying everything you can before you buy anything.
