The head of music at my school invited me to play the Haydn with my school orchestra at the last concert this year (my last concert), so I was wondering: what's the best (by that I mean reliable and scholarly, but preferably with a written cadenza for the 1st mvt) edition to get?
I've heard good things about the Tarr / Universal edition, and also the Henle. I'll be playing it on a Bb.

The Universal Edition (Edited by Ed Tarr) is the one that I use and recommend for al my students. It is also the edition that the Guildhall Examination Board expect you to play from, if you do their examinations.
There are a couple of cadenzas given with this edition, so you still get some say in what you play, although I would strongly recommend listening to as many performances as possible, by as many different players, see what they do and see which bits you like - then use them!
I have a few cadenza ideas for the Haydn, I haven't yet fixed a rigid one for every performance.
On the subject of cadenzas (which I might start in a different thread sometime, if I remember), how long do people make them? I read an article saying that the early baroque cadenzas would only last a breath, even in the time of Haydn they were only short statements by the soloist. Having heard cadenzas waffle on for over a minute in the Haydn concerto, I can see this being the way forward for my personal playing - a short cadenza which (hopefully) speaks to people, rather than a flash technical display which has nothing to do with musicality.
Sorry, bit of a pet hate - flashy cadenzas that contain no musical content - you know who you are! |
