My 1951 Olds Ambassador cornet needs badly to be re-laquered. Plays great, good valves, slides, etc. Local outfit quoted over 400 bucks for doing that. Is that about right? Suggestions? |

I know someone that will do it for $250 ... including an overhaul. They do great work too. Let me know if you would like more information. _________________ Bb - Yamaha Xeno 8335RGS

I had my Olds Recording overhauled at Borodi Music in Cleveland http://www.borodimusic.com/ and they charged $200! Great job too! _________________ Bill

Why re-lacquer? Just strip the old lacquer off with aircraft remover or paint stripper ( lots of posts on TH on how to do it) and polish it up in raw brass. Looks great and its free!

The raw brass idea is a good one. However, I kinda would like it to look as origional as possible. But will consider all options. I do like the raw brass look. But my Mendez is in the shop for same procedure and other work, and would like them to look similar. Might go the raw brass idea first - could always go from there if needed. Thanks for the idea. |

Call Kanstul in Anaheim and see what they charge. Of course you have shipping but it would be worth a try.
Thanks!

Kanstul recently charged me less than $200 for a beautiful scratch-lacquer job--that included the removal of the remaining old lacquer and a bit of ding removal. They are truly fantastic. |

Will ditto the quality of the Kanstul work. I had them do my wife Lori's '65 Ambassador cornet; stripped, cleaned, de-dinged, buffed and scratch-finished, and re-lacquered. Also new springs, corks and felts. About $225 plus shipping. They even threw in the little rubber spit-valve nibs for free!
Turn around time was estimated at about two weeks, but was actually four weeks. I like to think they took a little extra time on it, but it was probably just a busy time in the shop. The only thing I might have done differently would be to have the inner bell polished, but it is still a successful refurbishment.
When I showed it to her, Lori thought I'd brought home a new instrument until I got her to understand that it was her old horn brought back to life. She was amazed, to say the least. Plays much better than it ever did before. |
