Check out this Getzen Severinsen...

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3718552132&category=16214&sspagename=STRK%3AMEBWA%3AIT&rd=1

According to the serial number the horn should be about a 1968 or 69 vintage.

Are those the right valve buttons for that vintage?

How much would be a good price for this horn?

Ugly horn. Looks rode hard and put away wet. Looking at the completed auctions, it looks like a few that were *much* nicer went for $400-500. If it were me, I'd spend the extra $200, but that's just me. It may be a player, but its appearance scares me...

It looks straight though and dent free so...it could be detailed...but I'm wondering what the valves must be like?

Some of these older Getzens lose compression and get a bit "stuffy"

The seller emailed me close up pics and there is some pitting as well as wear.

I dunno......

I played one at a local music store that had that amount of wear and it played great. If it doesn't go much higher it would probably be a pretty decent deal.

Do you care about cosmetics? If not, this is a fine horn if it is mechanically in proper order. Getzens lose compression and play stuffy? Say What?

I bet the horn goes to at least $300 before they are done and it will probably still be a great horn for the price...and yeah...those don't seem to be the right valve buttons. Do you care?

Before committing it might be worth contacting the seller to see if they could take pics of the valves out of the horn. Might be too late for this particular auction though. I've asked sellers for extra pictures in the past on several occasions, and they've usually helped sway me one direction or the other...

Hey jgadvert,

Of course...cosmetics are not as important as to how an instrument plays....BUT cosmetics can offer some serious CLUES as to what the horn has been through and how it was maintained etc.

And also jgadvert....
Please don't lecture me about GETZEN trumpets. I have had SEVERAL and the more worn looking ones I have played have had leakage ...especially in the valves.
Maybe YOU haven't played as many as I have so you might have been lucky.
And as a professional musician I think I KNOW what I am talking about.

Remember it's just MY opinion based on MY experience...so lighten up a bit.

Thanks

Musicmork:

My apologies. Based on the experience (you have so well outlined) you obviously know what you are talking about(a pleasure to see that). Although I too have played many used Getzens, I have not found one with bad valves(guess I have been lucky). I figure thats why they offer a lifetime warranty(they know very few will ever have problems)

Also, I rarely find a ML bore horn that is more free blowing than the Doc Getzen. At least, I never found that the word "stuffy" was really applicable.

Hey Jgadvert.....We're cool. I appreciate the comments.

You were right....that horn went for over 300...and I ws outbid at the last friggin' second on that tired ol' Getzen.

I just can't IMAGINE how many gigs that horn has seen.

Oh and by the way...I LOVE Getzen valves...but if they are leaky the resistance of the horn goes from free blowing to trying to blow through a twisted garden hose..OY VEY!!!

Hmmm...mork got sniped. (Wasn't me!!)

I was thinking about this horn myself but I realized that a replate would run $300-500, which would bring things back to the cost of buying one in better shape anyway. On the other hand, wouldn't one of these look pretty in satin silver with bright silver accents?

Yeah I got sniped allright.....BUT I was actually kind of relieved when it was over.

Hell, I bought a MUCH sweeter looking Severinsen for 300 bucks last year.

There are plenty of horns out there....they just keep coming and coming and......

Severinsen's USED to go for more money years ago...what happened?

I remember in the 90's an average Sev would cost $450-$600 easily.

Now you can get em for around $300-$400?

Why is that? Maybe BRETT GETZEN can answer.
