I've played the Chicago Custom, a very heavy horn. It played great, with excellent intonation, slotting, and what a warm dark sound. Build quality was top notch. I think it would be excellent for small group jazz, but I found that I had to work hard to get it to "light up". It might not cut enough if you are in a bigband section. That said, Taylor makes a variety of models, some lighter weight, so you may find one that works for you. Try them out, they are great horns. _________________ Eric Sperry

I agree with Lawler Bb. I played a Taylor Standard for awhile in the big band I'm in when I was looking for a new horn and trying out several different brands. I was lucky enough to play a Kanstul WB, Taylor Std., Schilke B1 LB, Yammie Shew, and a Jupiter.
I absolutely loved the Taylor, the slotting was excellent, fit and finish were second to none, and even with the .471 bore, I didn't feel like I was being swallowed up and really didn't lose any range. The reason I didn't choose the Taylor was the sound. I play mostly lead/commercial type of stuff and the Taylor produced for me a dark, velvety sound that no matter what MP setup I played with I just couldn't cut through the band with the lead sound I was looking for.
But, if you're mainly a Jazzer/small group player I don't think you can go wrong. |

Hi,
Lawler Bb and NELAtrpt pretty well summed it up with their posts. I play a ChicagoII standard (with a red brass bell) in pretty much any situation but it suits the way I want to sound. However, it really depends on what sound you want.
I found the standard set up a little more versatile than the custom. The custom is a fantastic solo and small group horn but does have trouble in a section, the standard less so. Sizzling lead is neither trumpets forte but power laden, 'hit em between the eyes' lead as well as smokey jazz is right up their street. Depends on what you want.
I found the lighter horns to lack the character of the heavier ones but none-the-less are still good trumpets. The Phoenix is an absolute knockout..brighter than the Chicago but wow!!!
Hope this helps.
Regards

One ot the Taylor artists is a guy called Gary Kavanagh, I've seen him play in both a small band setting and a big band later that evening, sounded dark in the first and later on cut right through that big band. I didn't get a chance to talk to him but he looked to be playing the same horn for both gigs so I guess they must have at least one versitile model in the range. I understand that Andy Taylor is a very friendly guy so you won't go wrong if you drop him an email.

The Taylor horns may be good for a while but most players sell them at last . I saw the same Taylor sold on Ebay for the third time. But it is still getting more expensive. |

Hi,
This horn is actually the lite version of the standard I play (including the heat treated copper bell)..my valve slides are bright nickel though.
Ain't it something??

They sure are purdy!...(pretty!)
My cornet has the rose brass bell....it cant be far away now!!
Bright brass body...and 2 triggers. The kool thing I like, is the recessed valves when depressed.
Let me know when you hit Sydney Trevor....you can have a blow of the cornet. And, as I mentioned...you most welcome to come and have a play with my band! _________________ J:¬()-'''-<

Hi Jo,
Thanks for that. I'll be bringing my Taylor trumpet for a degrease with me so if you've never tried one that's your chance.
Am I right in thinking you play with Sutherland? I haven't played in a brass band in 25 years and even then I was a BBb player!!! I also come from Oyster Bay and went to school at St Pats..small world.
Regards
