Anyone played one of these recently? What did you think? I have heard good things about the old Excalibur, but not heard anything about this one.
£325($575) Gold Plated seems a bargain to me.

I will probably buy one in few days ... but i can't try them : none to try in France but very good price in England and Germany .....
If someone had played one : what about the valves.... and the thickness of the brass ?
( and apologizes for my poor english ) |

Papyc,
From what I know, the valves are decent, stainless steel. I know of one guy in a big band who sold his Kanstul Sig. Flugel when he played one of these, because he liked the sound better. That amazed me. But at this price I don't think you can go wrong. If you don't like it, resell it for about what you paid for it. I know of a place in the UK that has got some gold plated ones in at £325 (about €485), if you need the address let me know. I also know Thomanns in Germany has some (€499), but not sure if they have the gold plated one.
Ron

These sound interesting, especially for the price. I've never heard anything negative about Weril. It would be nice to hear some feedback. _________________ Dan

Isn't that a division of DEG?
CORRECTION.
DEG has them contract pieces for them from time to time.
I have never had a DEG instrument worthy enough to touch my lips.

I recently accompanied a friend who was looking to buy a Maestro cornet............We played the Maestro and Weril and came to the conclusion that the Werils were VERY good value. However, some of the "detail" on the Weril explained the low price. The finger rings were a little rough (not smooth like the Maestro) and the all round quality of the Weril was a little shoddy.
However - The Werils play well, and the valves, although a little rough, seemed ok (not sure how long they would last).
The above applies to the range of Weril instruments............VERY good value, but really not in the same league as the "pro" instruments. |

Yeah, that sums up my experience with Werils - they play well, but the build quality is fairly shocking. I have thought about buying one of their cornets and having my repairman strip it all down and put it together properly, see if that makes them any better.
I know he has done this with Bach trumpets and they come out greatly improved. |

I received my Gold Plated Regium and was not impressed with the fit and finish. The official distributor in the UK agreed with me and sent a rep to my house the next day and swaped it over for another one, handpicked. It is a lot better but still is quite shoddy. It plays nicely. Then today, I received a used Weril Master Flugel I got from a seller in Germany for £170. I love the way it plays! It has good valves, the finish is way better than the new Regium. All in all a great deal. It looks as if it has a gold brass flare. It is a little brighter than the Regium but I prefer the sound. So, if you consider a Weril, the new ones are OK, but you may just find a gem in a used one.

I played one once and the sound is good for the price and compares favourably with the Jupiter Flugels, but the one I had was finished like a galvanised bucket.
My daughter also plays a Weril cornet. It plays well for a student instrument, but suffers badly from poor finish
Weril could do better with a little attention in the finishing shop. _________________ Haagston US3 Bb Trumpet
