Hey guys I'm looking to buy a new Bb soon. Probably a ML Xeno in lacquer. [But I'm open to any suggestions (??)]
So- where is a good place to buy a Xeno? I found one store in Long Island, NY that is selling them new for $1439. It seems like only a year ago new yamahas were $1150 in lacquer. Is ~$1450 the going rate now? :-/

That is about the going rate for the new Xeno's. Most sites quote more than that actually.

Hi Scott,

I am one of the newest Calicchio dealers so I have to ask have you considered Calicchio? Their factory (now in Tula) is just starting to crank up production and they are making awsome horns, the raw brass ones are just a few hundred more and have a lot of personality IMHO. I have a few friends who love their Yamahas so it is obviously personal preference, you will need to make the decision. Bronstein's even has a Hollywood horn on eBay right now but be careful because the Hollywood QC was not that great. Also if the Calicchio price is a little high I have heard great things about the new Getzen line, check them out. Good luck and happy horn-hunting, Mark

Getzenguy, if you're going to be a dealer for any maker, then I'd suggest that you show respect for your competition. Yamaha makes great horns that can give great results. At least the owner of a Yamaha doesn't need to worry about QC.

I like it when dealers identify themselves as dealers, as you have, and participate in our discussions, BUT I think it's a bad idea to speak of the competition with anything other than respect.

Dave

Hey Dave, You are right, thanks for bringing it up, I was out of line. If you will notice I did plug in for the competition, Getzen. Yes you are also right I heard Ron Romm play a few years ago and that guy is impressive, yes with his Yamaha.
And for you Mr. Lips http://www.calicchio.com/models.htm will get you the Calicchio site but I don't think they are making flugels yet. Mark

Isn't calicchio the Flugal that Chuck Mangoine(sp) use to play?

When is the first ship date expected on the Flugals?

Mark, good luck with your dealership. I've heard nothing but great things about the Tulsa horns. I'm hoping that we'll have a few at the next DFW TrupetFest in November.

Thanks Dave.

Now back to Scott. One thing I forgot to ask is why a Bb? What type of orchestral stuff do you do? Most orchestra players I know use C trumpets 99% of the time. I use my Getzen Bb when playing Bb parts depending what the other guys are playing, I prefer not to have to transpose and the Getzen blends well with the Bach 229's sound. Make sure the sound you will end up with will blend in with the section. I would rather play a Bach 239 but it is too dark for most groups I play with, bummer. Enjoy, Mark

Hey thanks for the quick replies. As far as a Bb, I just sold my large bore Stomvi, which was just a bit too free blowing for me. I tried some ML Xenos at the National Trumpet Comp and man they felt great. But I'm going to try a bunch of different horns before making a purchase. (I actually like the playing characteristics of Bb better than C for some odd reason, and tend to use a C as a last resort trumpet for orchestra.)

You sold your Stomvi?!?! I love my Bb Elite...but that's cool! Anyway...check out Shilke, too. Sometimes it seems like they can be overlooked in the midst of Yamahas and Bachs. You can trick them out with just about anything!

Also...about the Calicchios: they make a very good horn. I tried almost all of them at NAMM Show (that place is awesome) and they were very responsive. I am prediciting that this is going to be a very well-known and played company pretty soon. Check 'em out!

Mr. Lips,

I spoke with Calicchio and they estimated three months before they start making flugels. Mark

I was thinking http://www.wwbw.com is suppose to be reasonable.

The going rate for brand new Xenos are probably $1,250 - $1,300. Places like http://www.wwbw.com have to list the Xenos at a certain price on the internet, but if you call them and speak to them on the phone... they will tell you that they can sell it for a couple hundred bucks cheaper. It's called something like... lowest manufacturing list price...? I saw it on their website a while back...
