Regarding advice/opinions in this forum about testing several of the same horn to pick the 'sweet' one........

I have noticed quite a difference between 'identical' horns attributable, I believe, to disparities between the relationship of the receiver to the leadpipe, which affects the relationship to the mouthpiece. I have seen variances a bit over 1/16". The slotting was adversely affected.

As if there isn't enough to think about! Any similar experiences?

Oh,yeah! And the difference in playing is huge. It reallly points out why it is worth the price to buy from a custom maker. If you could buy a factory horn in raw brass then you could get these disparities adjusted by a good repair man without ruining the plating.
