I want to know if Bach TR-300 trumpet is a good horn to learn.. pros & cons?? is it better than Yamaha student models (1335/2335)?
What about the Bundy & 1530 models?
THANKS. |

The Bach student horns are very good horns.
Younger begginers will somtimes benefit from the Bundy since it plays with more resistance (this was done intentionally...)
The Yamaha student model horn (2335M), or any of the older ones (2335, 2320, etc...), are generally considered Top-Of-The-Line student horns. _________________ Joe Gaspar

My recommendation for student instruments is always Yamaha.
They are reliable, very good quality, great sound and impressive intonation, especially for the money!
Saying that, I used to use a Bach 300 style cornet and it was very impressive. I would still have gone for the Yamaha (if I had been able to choose when I got it), but it was good for a student cornet. |

i actually prefer the Bach over the Yamaha in the student horns. They also have a better resale value.
I have a Bach 300 cornet that plays as good as I can play.

I think the 300 cornets are better than the trumpets. Some of the trumpets are lousy and some of the cornets are fantastic. (I have one that surprises me all the time) As with Bach Strads, Try before you buy. |

I like the Bach TR300 for all my beginners, but only for a year or 2 tops. As soon as they show promise I move them to a Getsen 770 Intermediate. _________________ -Bri

Bri,
I personaly feel "intermediate " horns are a waste. If a student shows promise on a student horn, why not move him to a Bach Strad or other reasonably priced proline horn?

Just a word of caution about the TR300. At my son's Jr High, it seems all of the kids were talked into buying (renting) one of these horns. I happened to go to school with the current band director and she mentioned to me that she was having an awful time getting the section to blend and tune. We both attributed most of this to the age and experience of the kids. However, as the year went on this problem didn't get any better at all. We both felt it should have gotten somewhat better; so, she asked me to come and play some of these horns and figure out if there might be some insight I could give.
Out of the ten TR300's I played, 3 were almost unplayable, the resistance was off the charts I actually thought something was stuck in the horns), consistent slotting was non-existent, and the variation in tuning from bottom to top was very inconsistent. (I suggested she have the students give their horns a thorough cleaning and we would try again)
3 were okay, what I would expect from a beginners horn. Intonation was okay, slotting-okay, resistance wasn't what I would like, but probably what kids their age would need to blow against.
The other four were pretty good all the way around. If I were going into high school, (don't I wish) I wouldn't have a problem using it for a year or two as a marching horn.
Long story short, I would go with my students or send someone with them who can listen and play one if necessary to aid in a purchase.
Just my two pennies. |

Great horns, but unless you are extremely lucky you have to go through 4 or 5 of them to find a good one.
I went through 4 before I finally found a decent "keeper" And I picked it up cheaper than some of the other 4.
Of the ones I have tried the Early models did better than the later ones (any with the picky ring and preferably made in LA)

The Bach TR300 is an acceptable beginner horn, but the black plastic case will not hold up beyond three years. I bet in the last five or six years I have returned at least twenty of these cases for replacement because the hinges break and the plastic around the latches cracks, rendering the case totally useless. Yamaha student trumpets come with a very sturdy, quality wood shell case. In my opinion the best student trumpet outfit is the King 601. |

Go for an Olds Ambassador, or shell out for a intermediate or pro horn. _________________ "Discipline is remembering what you want." |

Bach TR300's are very nice but you should upgrade before you go into high school to a better trumpet like a Bach Stradivarius or a Yamaha Allegro or something like that.
I ended up with a Holton T602 USA and I had no choosing in this. |

The ones I've played in a section with were atrociously out of tune, especially on the open E in the staff. |

I would skip the whole "beginner horn" and buy the Bach TR200....I have 9 practically beginner trumpets in my section (all freshmen who pretty much didnt play much in the elementary/middle school level at all) The one with the best tone out of all the freshmen plays on the TR200
Id also go for an Olds Ambassador or a Benge...I heard Benge's have really nice valves...and the Olds one of my peers rented one so he could practice his tuba music at home instead of bringing that big old tuba home (I dont know why he came up with that logic though) I looked at it and played it and its a quality student horn.
yamahas are also good...7 out of the 8 years ive been playing has been played on a yammie student model. Very easy horn to adapt to. Again a quality student horn...pretty much around here....if you dont own a bach you own a yamaha. This is just my 2 cents... _________________ Cheers,
