On the song Magic Hour, what is the high stuff that Wynton is putting in the begining, it doesn't even sound like a trumpet because it is on the soft side.

I got the CD just the other day and heard the cut for the first time over the weekend. It's pretty amazing stuff but I would agree with you that the sound is different from we usually associate with upper register playing. Wynton has incredible chops and can do just about anything on the horn. In some ways the upper register stuff sounds like someone demonstrating an unusually difficult technique rather than expressing a musical/artistic idea. But then Wynton is a phenomenal player, a master musician, so who am I to judge.

Some of the slower stuff on the CD is really beautiful and quite lyrical.

He plays the same kind of lick on Branford's latest. It is amazing although it sounds like it was 'punched in' and not a spontanious. I think there are those who will try and emulate it and use it in their playing. I find I listen to Wynton to find out how the horn should (could) be played. I listen to Terence and others to hear soulful playing.

I wasn't bashing Wynton, I was just wondering what that high jibberish was and possibly how he did it. I agree, the rest of the CD is very precise.

I'm wondering the same thing. It's so quiet and focused and beautiful.

He uses no tricks, I have heard Wynton do this and more live. I asked Ryan about this and he replied that it happened everynight.
Amazing!
