Not yet, there is probably going to be another round within a year though. Nemes has been sitting in for a while now and even was mentioned in the tribune this past Sunday. Check out some of the other posts for more detailed information.

An orchestra MUST have a first trumpet player!

They have one - Mark Ridenour. I just can't imagine why they don't give him the job. He's earned it and is a marvelous musician and player.
Off the subject a bit......
Wiseone, the other day was Mr. Bernstein's birthday. WFMT in Chicago played bits of the West Side Story you did with him. All I can say is WOW! You made that horn sing!!! I am going to listen to the whole thing later today. Then I'll go practice. |

A very good player who I probably shouldnt mention had 6 out of the 9 votes from the panel at a previous audition. Barenboim (apologies if misspelled) though not continuing as conductor but is still on the panel, said no and I guess that's that. This is a very discouraging thought. I'm sure he knows great trumpet players and musicians but that combined with another issue in houston has gotten me kinda down lately. |

Why can't Bud just come back until they find someone like him. They could tone down what they play to make it easier for him. Imagine what would happen to ticket sales if Bud came back as Principal for a few months...

Mark is the man for the job! He's the main reason I wanted to go to Roosevelt. I've found so many more once I got there. This guy's got it all. Since he's been playing first, I feel so much better about Bud not being at the helm any more. _________________ WAK

Since the private re-audition, Mark Ridenour and Chris Martin are the finalists.
I talked with Chris a little bit this past weekend, and he is scheduled to play with CSO several times through the end of the year...I don't know if they will extend trials beyond that or not. I don't envy him the travel and juggling his Atlanta gigs with the CSO stuff, but hey -- how many people will ever get the chance to juggle principal engagements with top orchestras! He sounds absolutely terrific, and if he wins/accepts the job, Atlanta will miss him terribly!
I have not heard Mark Ridenour play, but I have heard nothing but rave reviews.
Good luck to both, and Chris, if you read this, I repeat my plea..."Don't leave us, Man!"

I only know of one performance that Chris is doing with the CSO. It's actually next month, and he'll be playing principal on everything (that's Chicago's way of doing it):
December 9-11
Piston- Symphony No. 2
Mozart- Piano Concerto No. 17
Shostakovich- Symphony No. 6
- Oh and if Chris leaves for the CSO... then we'll be sure to find a good replacement _________________ "We communicate through motor systems not sensory systems. If they do the same procedure as last time, both Mark and Chris will also play an audition either with the whole orchestra reading excerpts or with just the brass section. They are doing everything correctly to find the best candidate for that very hot chair.

Mark Ridenour and the CSO did the Shostakovich 8th a few weeks ago. I felt as though he really did a fine job of leading the brasses. Maybe this is just projection on my part because I really do want to see him get the gig. Can you imagine what it was like sitting right next to Bud for what, 7-8 or so years? |

Chris Martin played on the 9th. Awesome as expected (one extremely minor missed slur) the french horns and low brass kicked ... too. Piston, Mozart, Shostakovich works were on the program with Leonard Slatkin conducting. Man...... that concert could have been soooo much better if some people didn't cough at the pppppp dynamics, but I'm not going to complain....good stuff.

Must have been a Freudian slip. I meant to ask if Chris was playing as I heard he was scheduled to play some Shostakovich. I suppose he'll have to come back and play when Barenboim is back in town in January.

Was just in Chicago last week. Heard the CSO Friday night playing Shostakovich 1, Brandord Marsalis doing a classical sax solo and the CSO playing the Little Mermaid by Zemilinsky. They played incredible and the brass playing, especially the trumpets was absolutely out of this world. With all the that power in the low brass and horns, the trumpets still soared far above them. Mark was playing principal and he was really, really laying it down hard along with John and Tage who supported him very well. Had a lesson with Tage, great guy and stellar musician, and he gave me the run down on the principal situation. It's between Chris Martin and Mark Ridenour. Chris played with the CSO last week and will be coming out again. I haven't heard Chris play, but after hearing Mark, he would most certainly continue the fine legacy of principal tpt playing with the CSO. We all know that no one replaces Bud. |
