Seems towards the top of the range for that model, but nothing majorly out of the ordinary to me...

Last winter they were going for around $750 on ebay. The current average is just over $500. Not sure why. There were a couple of ones in much nicer shape - one rebuilt horn went for $512 in 'like new' condition. _________________ Dave M.

Still a great, great deal ....... I'd prefer a god Recording over most of what's available today. |

This one may still require at least $300 to bring it back to life. _________________ Allen - 'Chops-in-Hotlanta'

No, the description says the valves are excellent. It sounds like a player to me. The Recording is one of the best horns Olds ever made. Maybe the best next to the Super Recording.

I'd say this guy got a fair price on that horn. So what if it needs a little work? It's going to last several more lifetimes with some proper care and maintenance.
If we consider horns an expense rather than an investment, this price is dirt cheap. And if we consider this an investment, this is still dirt cheap. In 60 years I'll bet this horn commands some heavy duty bucks. (An LA would possibly command more.)
How many gigs would it take to recover the cost of this horn plus, say, $300.00 in work? Over the long haul, an insignificant number, and this horn will definitely serve its owner well over a very long haul.

I bought a 1961 Recording on ebay last November ..it certainly compliments my Eclipse Special Edition and my Bach/Selmer 25th Anniversary 43 Strad. A beautiful horn to play!! It cost me $650 plus carriage and customs duty...well worth the money |

Two years ago I paid $602.50 including shipping for my 1957 Recording. Hard to judge condition from a slightly dark photo but, based on the seller's word, I'd say the buyer did well.
In my opinion, a good Recording is easily the equivalent of a modern pro horn in the $1,000 to $1,500 price range. In fact, I consider mine to be one of the best horns in my stable, which includes a 1971 Bach 37 and a 2002 Kanstul 1504. _________________ Jim Hatfield

Are we now elevating the Olds to Diety status?
Now there's a Freudian slip if I ever saw one......
