Hello all,
I just wanted to know what CSO CD's would be recomended for listening to Herseth. I am going to be auditioning for an orchestra in September and I want to listen to the master at least once every day between now and then. Thanks. _________________ "... and when I got all done he said, 'Well you're my next principal trumpet player.' And I said, 'Okay, I'll go home and practice.'" -A. Herseth |

Well let's see there are only a few dozen.........
Pictures at an Exhibition - Jarvi
Pictures at an Exhibition - Reiner
Mahler No. 5 - Solti
Mahler No. 5 - Barenboim (DVD)
Mahler No. 1 - Solti
Pines of Rome - Reiner
The Planets - Levine
Overtures and Preludes (Wagner) - Barenboim
Basically anything under Reiner, Solti, and most if not all under Barenboim. I'm sure persons with more knowledge and authority will chime in; these are some of my favorites off the top of my head. |

For starters . . .
Stravinsky -- Song of the Nightingale -- Reiner
Bruckner 7 -- Solti
All of the Richard Strauss works with Reiner conducting.
Enjoy,

Ooh, ooh, Shostakovich 1 & 7 with Bernstein conducting!!!!!!!
And there is a fantastic recording of Hovahness "Mysterious Mountain" with Reiner. I believe its on the same CD as the Song of the Nightengale that was already mentioned. The trumpet solos are pure magic on this recording!

I would recommend Mahler 2/5/7 with Abbado, and the live video with Hindemith conducting (avaliable at the CSO store). Also, the Gabrieli recording with the Cleveland and Philly brass sections from 1968 (available on re-release).
Finally, I suggest the Bourgeois Gentilhomme recording with Reiner. |

we should compile a comprehensive list of all the CSO recordings with Bud on them... or does that list already exist? Kind of like the people over in the Orchestral forum are doing with the major orchestras. I'd want to know them all. although the problem is I would go use up all my money on all of them. _________________ It's a job that's never started that takes the longest to finish.

Man, any of them are great resources to listen to to get great ideas. I've got several of the same piece from different years and he plays 'em different everytime...partly because of the man waving the stick around in front of him.
Don't neglect other great orchestra though. I did that back in high school and my freshman year in college. But I know where you're coming from.
As far as that list of Bud recordings I haven't seen one...at least a complete listing. That's a good idea for a new topic. I'm going to go through all my recording of the CSO and start there. If someone doesn't post a FULL list, I'll start a new one going. _________________ WAK

I recall reading in one of the sources I used for my thesis that the CSO has compiled a complete list of recordings. If one were to get the list from them, it should be pretty easy to weed out the ones that Herseth did not play on. There were only a couple, and I could provide the ones that he did not perform on if somebody gets ahold of the CSO's master list. |

That's right...the Rosenthal Archives! I forgot all about them. And I wanted to do it the hard way. I'll look into that and see what they can give me. _________________ WAK
