How can this be avoided when playing your instrument?

You should monitor your blood pressure if you're worried about stroke. For $60.00 or less you can get a BP monitor at a drug store or a place like Walmart. Numbers above 140/90 should cause you to see a doctor. 120/80 would be a good BP. jbqd

Cause I've heard of two types:

1) A vessel exploding in your head...

2) A clog of a vessel of the years causing I think what is called a anurism..

I just just don't want niether of these. Thnks for the info though

Actually, an aneurysm is when a blood vessel explodes (they occur either in the head, or the abdominal aorta, BTW). A stroke (or cerebrovascular accident, shortened to CVA) is where a clot occurs in a cranial blood vessel, causing blood loss and loss of function to part of your brain. Most often, this clot comes from plaque from arthereosclerosis or a blood clot from another part of the body.

As one poster mentioned, checking your blood pressure is a good idea. Hypertension is a significant cause of strokes. Also, arthereosclerosis or diabetes can cause strokes. It's always a good idea to have some knowledge of your family's medical history, and to see a doctor regularly. As far as strokes from trumpet playing go, I don't know how that would cause a stroke....maybe increased pressure? Hope this helps.

The post above is right on. I'll add by saying there are basically two types of strokes; an ischemic stroke which means a lack of blood supply to a part of the brain usually caused by a clot inside an artery, and a hemorrhagic stroke which is caused by an artery that ruptures releasing into the brain matter. The latter usually does not involve an aneurysm, but rather results from high blood pressure that exceeds the strength of the artery. An aneurysm will cause blood AROUND the brain, called a subarachnoid hemorrhage which can lead to an ischemic stroke because the blood vessels go into spasm from the irritation of the blood around them. Ruptured aneurysms can also produce blood in the brain tissue, but there is almost always blood around the brain as well (unlike a pure hemorrhagic stroke from high blood pressure in which blood is IN the brain tissue). Is that confusing enough?

I would think trumpet playing can cause a hemorrhagic stroke since there in definately a rise in cerebral blood pressure. Same as holding your breath and bearing down hard.

There was an article published by the Minnesota Medical Association from February 2003 entitled The Perils of Trumpet Playing by Charles R. Meyer, M.D. It’s an interesting read!

One of the findings says, “Although pressure is a part of life for trumpeters, there is no evidence of increased incidence of hypertension in brass players.”

Enjoy!

True. All in all, I've never heard of a trumpet player "stroking out" while playing. I doubt trumpet playing leads to long standing hypertension. Hemorrhoids are probaly more common. In some, that would be the same as a stroke.

Now, passing out while playing may be confused with a stroke, I suppose... Sometimes it's a sensation of a person's vision closing in, the peripheral vision disappearing, followed by a loss of balance. I imagine that the blood pressure might shoot up when this happens, but I don't really know...
In order to avoid that, a player has to train himself to keep the muscles on the rear of the neck from tensing up. This interferes with blood flow to or from the brain. Excessive pressure of the mthpce against the chops is one cause, the muscles must tense to counteract the rearward pressure of the mthpce... jbqd

You may think this sounds crazy, but you have a way bigger chance of having a stroke while on the toilet than ever having one while playing the trumpet.

Watch your blood pressure. Have it treated if it gets high.
