My former band director was telling me about some jazz band that plays nothing in 4/4. All the time signatures are like 7/8 or something... does anybody know what the name of that band is? He told me, but I can't remember for the life of me.

Thanks,
wtp

Yep, Don Ellis. That's some crazy stuff...the trumpet section in that band used 4-valve trumpets that were designed to allow you to play quarter steps.

One on my favorite trumpeters and an often ignored innovator in the late 60's and early 70's! Just for sknicks, try transcribing the head for Bulgarian Bulge off the Underground album (The New Don Ellis Band Goes Underground, 1969 I think). If I recall correctly, the time signature was 33/8. Impossible for a 15 y/o kid to count at the time (I'm 52 now and still can't count it). One of those numbers you just have to feel. Wish my fingers would still let me play that fast.

Check out some of the old vinyl. Groovy stuff!

Keep on swinging,
Matt

Don Ellis was quoted as saying the only thing they played in 4/4 was "Take Five."

Perhaps slightly off topic, but if you're interested in non-4/4 stuff, you might want to check out "Adventures in time" by Stan Kenton. It has 5/4, 3/4, 9/8, 6/8 and 7/4 in there. Not "easy listening" though. All arrangements by Johnny Richards.

Regards, Christine

Another tasty stan kenton song that I like, not an album, is the song "Time for a Change." 5/4. I just found the CD with it at the local used record shop. Nice to hear it again. Used to play it live in the seventies.

Um... I'm pretty sure "Time for a Change" is in 10/4 time, with a couple of others occasionally tossed in.

The verse to "Them Bones" by Alice in Chains is in 7.
The opening to "White Room" by Cream is in 5.
"Living in the Past" (I forget the original group) was covered by Maynard ("Maynard Ferguson," 1974 or '75) is
also in 5.

I also understand that "Time" is a magazine... although my percussion friends tell me otherwise!

I believe "Living in the Past" was originally by Jethro Tull.

The "Love, love, love" part of "All You Need Is Love" by the Beatles is in 7, as is most of "Money" by Pink Floyd. "The Fish" on Yes's Fragile album is also in 7. And "Supper's Ready" by the old (i.e., real and non-pop) Genesis has a section entitled "Apocalypse in 9/8." And a bunch of "Tarkus" (Emerson, Lake, and Palmer) is in (I think) 10/8.

OK, I'll shut up now to avoid totally hijacking this thread.

And how about Hank Levy's writing? Very often it finds itself in "uncommon" time.
