Does anyone have any of his records? He plays on Horace Silver's Song For My Father album but I havent heard his solo work. I saw in a catalog a $50 box set of his music but I dont think i'll shell that out til i've heard some of it.

Carmell plays wonderfull solos and captures the spirit of each piece he plays on. I had the good fortune to play with him and he bought one of my cornets. He is missed. RIP

Wow, you knew/played with Carmell!!! He was/is soooo underrated, along with cats like KD, DuPree Bolton, JOE GORDON, Joe Wilder, etc. What was Carmell like? He must have been cool, if he bought you a horn.

If you have a Napster account (the new legal Napster), you can listen to Carmell's "Jay Hawk Talk" album in addition to some recordings with Horace Silver and Booker Ervin. Every track I've heard Carmell play on is great.

To me, Carmell sounds a lot like Blue Mitchell. That's not to say he's necessarily imitating Blue, but rather that his playing is similarly amazing.
