What mouthpiece do you use to play lead?
What do you like about it and what would you change?
You can add the horn if you like....

How would that work for you? What someone else plays should not be what you order and play. So many different solutions. Find what works for you then tell us.

Terry Warburton makes what I play.

I once ordered a mouthpiece played by a lead player I admired, the 14A4A. Could never make it work. Found out later Forest Bucktel did'nt play it either!

When I was younger, a really strong player I admired played the 14a4a. I just can't play Schilkes with any success.

I use a GR 64M/s, it depends on the day. The only thing I might change on it would be the rim (make it a little flatter). Anything smaller than the S cup and I have problems bottoming out.

Two basic and simple rules:
1. play the smallest mouthpiece YOU can play on, to play lead gigs.
2. Play the biggest mouthpiece YOU can play on, to play classical gigs.

This could mean one mouthpiece for everything.
It could mean two slightly different pieces (Warburton 5SV-lead, Warburton 5MC classical, Schilke 14A4-lead, 14B for classical.) I don't often play with anyone or any section that plays the exact same mouthpiece size. If you are looking for a lead piece, go with something slightly more shallow and narrow than your current mouthpiece. You don't need a drastic switch to notice the difference.

I use a Monette B4L mouthpiece for all of my lead playing. It works for me and so I use it. I like that it is consistent across all registers of the instrument, both high and low. The sound is there, too. I seem to make it sizzle. It is funny because other players are mentioning the Schilke mouthpiece for Forrest Buchtel. I play on the Schilke trumpet that he had played on (the B3L) for lead playing. I did not know that that was what he played on until after I had purchased it.

I am playing a Warburton 8ES/12 now. I also have another 8ES (for sale) and a 8MC.

I use a Warburton SV cup with a Bach 1 C rim. For the underpart I switch between a 5 star and a KT.

I cannot play shallow cups. Too big a lips perhaps? I usually recommend the Fokus 10.5 that comes with a deeper cup option. They make a 10.5 Lead (shallow if you can handle it), but I recommend a 10.5 All-Around or Symphonic for people like me. Either that or a Rudy Muck 17. When I need to play high on the bone (my primary instrument -- I never play lead on trumpet) I use a Muck with a cushioned rim. Nice to have blood flowing to the lips.

We just got back from the west coat and a very successful tour.
Nice to see the ocean again, I miss it.

We have 9 months of winter and 3 months of hard skiing here,
in San Diego, 9 months of summer, and 3 months you don't have
to wear sun screen.

I play the FoKus LEAD, and ARTIST. The FoKus LEAD has a #25 hole an the ARTIST a #26.
I play a Calicchio 2 S#1842.

According to the info on this page http://www.fokusmouthpieces.com/ it says the Lead has a 27 throat and the Artist has a 28 throat. Can you clarify?

Hi,DCB1, Thanks for the question, and having a look at the FoKus site.
You are correct the FoKus LEAD comes stock with a #27, and the ARTIST is stock
with a #28, and this works very well for most players. In fact I use the ARTIST 28 when I play Piccolo trumpet, and D trumpet.
But for Bb I have found, for me the slightly larger bore to a #25 hole for the LEAD works well with the Calicchio 2 S# 1842 that I love to play, it works equally well with my Bach 37 also, and the ARTIST with a #27 is perfect with my Light weight Bach 43.

I have had several players that like the LEAD #25, Mark Pender, and Manfred Kinle in Germany, so I tried it myself and really like it too. It works best with my Bach ML 37.

Here the way Manfred put it:

“I got the mouthpiece on Tuesday, thank you again. I had the chance to test it last weekend on 2 concerts, one with a Soul-Funk&Rock Band and
yesterday unplugged with BigBand. My results:
Generally:
Very good mouthpiece, as you described very powerfull, no problem to play the two concerts without having practiced with it before.
For me:
Throat size #25 is perfect.
Rim and cup geometry are perfect.
Rim diameter is a bit too small for me. I need a bit more room for extrem upper register playing.
Sound is a bit too bright for my sound conception, means backbore is a bit too narrow for me.”

I am doing what the player in the old days did, custom fitting the “Blow to the horns they played, and to the way I play”. You can do the same with every piece you own and with every horn you play. Buy two of you favorite mouthpieces, have one altered, and keep one stock, and compare to see if it is better or not. Herseth told me he has a box of more than 300 mouthpieces before he found what he really likes, and even at that he unscrewed the rim and would change to under part to accommodate different horns, and the “ears” of different conductors. They were made after his car accident in the early 1950’s. He did his audition on a 7B and had to play wider so the rim would not sit on the scars. The answer to the question that well will never know is would the Orchestra/Symphonic world of today be playing Bach 1-3 if he has never been in the accident????? What do you think???

I use the FoKus 1.5A for all my lead playing. I am finding my self using it for most of my other playing as well. But wen I need a Big clasical sound I use a Monette1-5M.

I use a Curry 5Z for lead and some jazz gigs. Compared to a lot of lead pieces, the 5Z isn't that small and provides an open enough tone to use for jazz. For legit I use a GR 66L, it's the largest mouthpiece in my arsenal. It can wear you out if you're not careful. Be smart and rest.
