Hey Pat!

I spoke with Woody's son, Woody III today. In case some of you don't know, he put together a website for his Dad and there are some great soundclips and information.

Hey Matt,

Yeah you showed me that earlier and required me to watch the stepping stones video. I just love that man's playing. I felt it needed to be expressed.

I must say Woody is my absolute favorite jazz improvisor. Hands down. I have everything this man has ever recorded (I think) including Lp's I got back in the 70's which are out of print and never available on CD. I saw Woody play for the first time back in Memphis on his "Master of the Art" tour.(Early 1980's) He had two of my Memphis State (Now U of M) comrads in the band. Tony Reatus and Mulgrew Miller. The night started out intense and never let up. Woody was pure energy and he left me on the edge of my seat all night. A true Musical Genius and it is a tragedy he never became popular like other trumpeters and made more money. The story's of his death are also very sadening. Many said he sounded like Freddie Hubbard in his early days but the man really forged a new frontier for the Trumpet. Congratulations to Woody III on his website, It is a much needed link I will now be sending my trumpet students to.

Woody played like he was in pain. Lots of vertical lines rather than flowing lines like Freddie. Definitely not like Freddie although at first I thought so.

IMHO

I really love Woody's "Solid" album.

Screamin Mothers? No, I guess I should have said recorded under his own name.Although I do have quite a few of his side projects as well. including the more recent stuff he did after he moved to Europe. I would like to find this "Screamin Mothers though. Who else is on there? and is Woody playing much on there?

Yep Stepping Stone was the recording that got me started on Woody Shaw. I had it first on 8 track tape. (Ha Ha giving my age away) Then I got the LP as a cutout at a local Peaches records back when I was living in Memphis. Still among my favorite Woody.

"Screaming Mothers" is the biggest tease with the worst payoff in my history of buying vinyl. All-star large ensemble (I recall that Snooky Young is in the trumpet section) playing really, really, really dated instrumental arrangements of rock tunes. No solos.

Just checking to see whether you had them *all*.

I finally broke down and converted "Stepping Stones" to CD. You can get it as part of the Mosaic set, but not by itself at this point. That was my first WS album...definitely some great stuff.

I went to the used CD store today and looked for "Screaming Mothers" no luck. They had three WS albums. (2) Woody III and 1 Master of the Art.

$3.70 and $1.85.

The recording that is not included in that mosaic special edition set or any of the re- release CD's is "Lotus Flower". I take notice of that because I did a solo transcription from that LP in my Improv. class (1980 something). Anyone else ever try to transcribe Woody? Those akward seventuplets ccombined with the linear lines is hell to transcribe let me tell you!

Jeff:

Actually, 'Stepping Stones: Live at the VV" is not part of the Mosaic set (unless they've recently added it). That set only includes the studio recordings.

I've got a bootleg of Woody and Wynton in the early eighties. Not that anyone would care though. Great cuttin session though.

I´m sure you have Dexter Gordon´s "Sophisticated Giant".

But what about that live record by the George Gruntz Concert Jazz Band on MPS?
And that one "Montreux Summit" album from the 70s with Woody duelling Maynard?
