Hi All!

I really enjoy hearing about your favorite horns and why you like it. I've gotta try the Yamaha Z, extra large bore Schilke and Calichio ultra ASAP. But...if your fortunate enough to have a second "spare" horn, what is it and why do you like it?

For me, my recently acquired 1968 Doc Getzen backs up my Callet Jazz. Although outperformed by the Jazz, the Getzen has a special sound, intonation, projection and valve action I really enjoy. It just feels really good in my hands! I know some of the happy Schilke owners understand what I mean. You have a horn you feel that way about?

My main Bb trumpet is a Schilke X4. My backup is a .468 bore Selmer K-Modified -- it was the cheapest horn I could find that blew vaguely like the Schilke. Besides, my first trumpet was a K-Modified, so there's a sentimental appeal.

I also play in a group that tends to play in pretty rough clubs. There's been a time or two when wild dancers have crashed up on stage, or when a shoving match has started up in the bands' lap. For those shows I use an old DeNicola Puje -- it was cheap and it's heavy.

I have a Super Olds as a backup for my Callet Jazz. The Super was my first horn, I had borrowed if from my uncle who used it when he was in high school. I returned it to him when I got my own horn, and he gave it back to me again along with a Super Olds cornet this past Christmas.

My main horn is a Smith-Watkins and the backup horn is a Kanstul 1500A. The Kanstul is a nice horn but it won't hold a candel to the SW.

I don't really have a backup horn, something that I need to rectify eventually or else one day I'm going to find myself in a bind without a horn. Then again, the trombonist in the band is a brass tech at a local music store so I suppose in a pinch, he can get me something. Then again, he's good enough that unless I really screwed my horn up, he could probably fix it about as quickly as he could get me a spare for the night.

I got two back ups depending what I would be doing. Courtios Evolution 1 forClasssical, pop, and ballad. 1968 bach for lead. I could play the Evolution for every thing but then I would have to sell my Bach.

My backup horn is a Kanstul-made Besson Brevete. I bought it for fairly short money from a jazz trumpeter who had recorded with it. He had customized the horn, stripping the finish down to raw brass, moving the braces, replacing the finger hook with another one, removing the spit valves and having the horn cyrogenically frozen (although there's no documentation). Oh my goodness, this horn plays wonderfully. It has a nice core and really sings in the upper register. As a lightweight horn, it's a great backup to my Xeno. The valves need replating, and I'm about to have that done. This horn is worth it. Its history and the way it plays makes it really fun to own.

I've also got an LA Benge 3x and a Connstellation 38B, which are each nice in their own ways, but the Brevete is the one I'd let go of last.

(There's another Besson Brevete by Kanstul up on eBay right now. No connection to me.)

An old King SilverFlair. First horn I got as a CP a few years back. (Now using a Smith Watkins 464R25, great sweet horn!)

This is for Larry. Which Smith-Watkins model do you play on? Also which leadpipes?

Hi Jim,
My SW is an R25 with a #12 lead pipe. I'm searching around now for anyone who might have a #34 pipe they would like to part with as a somethimes alternative to the one I have. It's an impressive horn for sure.

Larry,
I do know someone who has the #34 leadpipe, but it is new not used. He is a rep for Smith-Watkins.

What is the bore on your R25? I just tried out (2) 464 bore R25's.

Jim,
Correction, my horn has the R20 bell (not the R25), ML bore .460, and as I stated earlier the #12 pipe. Who is the SW sales rep? I might be interested in contacting that person. I know that Rayburns sells the horns and pipes, but I haven't talked to them.

Larry,
The Smith-Watkins rep is John Mead. His e-mail is.

seamusmead@outdrs.net

Do you try the R25 464 bore, and compare it the yours?

Jim,
No, I'm afraid my only experience with the SW horns are via the one that I own. I traded for mine and decided to do so based on the many positive comments made about the SW on this site. My guess is that the bell weights will make a subtle difference, while the lead pipes will provide a much more substantial difference in terms of altering the playing characteristics of the horn. This is just a hunch, you understand, and not based on actual experience. Thanks for the sales rep info.

#1 Bb is a Bach 43 with a Blackburn leadpipe and rounded crook. My backup is a '50s Olds Recording. It's my nostalgia horn but it will work in any situation in a pinch. On C I use a Blackburn 19A24S, the finest horn I've ever played, but once in a while I play with west coast Bach fascists so I keep an early 70s Bach ML 239 with standard leadpipe. It has that nice dark Bach sound and the older model plays as open as most large bore horns.

1.) Bach 43/43*LTLR (main horn with all the goodies and mods.)
2.) Holton ST200 ( Bud Brisbois model)
3.) Bach 37 1967-68 raw brass
4.) Reynolds "Contempra" 1963-64
All have varied and unique sound and I'll use whichever I'm in the mood for. However, if it's a serious legit gig then I'll think first about my weapon of choice.

My main horn is a Schilke B5. My back up horn was a Burbank Benge with a #3 bell. Unfortunately I let that one go recently to a lucky player who will be using it for his primary horn. I'll have to find a new backup. I am thinking of trying a Calicchio or Callet.
