I know Monette shortens their mouthpieces as the key of the trumpet goes up but I was wondering if anyone out there has altered a stock mouthpiece for an other-than-Bb trumpet??
I play on a Bach 1C; I put the little thing on a lathe and took about .020" off of the end of the shank, tapered the inside edge, took a little off of the outside of the shank to keep the gap the same and then opened the throat up to a #25. I know this is not really a scientific way to do things but I seem to get a cleaner sound out of my C trumpet now comparing it to my stock 1Cs. Has anyone else tried anything like this?

Oh yeah, been there done that! Ruined a couple of good pieces that way.

You change several things when you drill out your piece, shorten the distance between the backbore and the throat etc.

Shortening the piece changes how the horn responds (overall length has changed), but if you got it right congrats!!

When does your new line of mouthpieces come out??

Hi Mark! -
You need to check out a hilarious recent thread. Chris aka Mr. Hollywood had a similar experience with a GR. He received several horrified replies, and it was one of the funniest threads I ever read.

Even funnier, somebody asked about people's opinions on GR, and Chris replied that he thought they were a bit too short. I'm sure you can find this thread pretty easily.

The GR website has this topic in their Ask GR section.
