In the movie database IMDb, Mendez is listed as actor in two:
1. Cowboy (1958) .... Trumpeter in cantina
2. David Rose and His Orchestra (1954) .... Trumpet Player
Do any of you know about #2? (I have #1 on DVD)
Mendez is also listed as crew (musician) in two:
1. Cowboy (1958) (musician: trumpets, "Cantina" scene)
2. For Whom the Bulls Toil (1953) (trumpeter)
I thought he played in more movies (as a musician) - perhaps he did, but got no credit for it?
Ole
P.S.

He was featured a little bit in the Mexican musical movie, FIESTA. It is so minor (in soundtrack) that it is hardly worth mentioning.
Of course, he was in the MGM Orchestra for 10 years. Probably tons of movies where he is in the orchestra.
OJ (or anyone else?):
I'll bet you can't tell me what 5 second excerpt from one of Mendez' LPs was used by CBS television as a quick station identification tune in the late 1960s.
It would be played perhaps once each hour on TV just before each program would begin. You would hear the music and see the CBS "eye" logo, and then an announcer's voice would say...."You are watching CBS."
Doubt that you would have seen this in England. I believe the year was 1966 or 1967, not quite sure. They never mentioned Mendez' name, either. Of course, anyone who really knew Mendez' recordings would know it was him in a heartbeat.
Wow, I'm so excited. I think I've finally stumped you, OJ!

Hey, no fair!
Not only was it not heard in the UK, it was before many of us were born (not that I am calling anyone "old" or anything )
So, we can shoot blind...

I have no clue.
There are of course several tunes you can think of and others I'm pretty sure CBS would not have used (like not too Mexican, etc.). Not a tune recorded a long time before mid 1960.....etc. etc.
Perhaps a tune with a "fanfarish theme"?

Ha Ha Ha Ha !!!!! I finally got you, Ole!
I guess I'll have to give you (and others) a little hint.
The 5 second excerpt was unaccompanied, just as it is on the LP.
I'm still bettin' you will be guessing.

OK guys, I guess no one is going to venture anymore guesses about what Mendez lick was used in the CBS identification spots in the late 1960s.
Mendez plays a cadenza in the third movement of the Haydn. CBS used his first "C" (on the B-flat trumpet) through the first fast lick which holds a top line "F" (E-flat concert) before continuing the cadenza. So, the lick used is only about 5 seconds long.
Too bad he was not credited.
