On a club date (restaurant/bar), I prefer the Hamilton (more stable, instrument is up off of the ground and more visible too). For concert stage (orchestra, quintet, brass band), I prefer the K&M 5-legged stand (more portable, plenty stable, people are more conscientious around the stage).

I am like AvargeJoe... I have both. I will be getting a Hamilton trombone stand for when I am standing to play (which is most of the time). It is a lot closer for me to reach.

Hey, if you're looking for a "sturdy" stand (trumpet or trombone), check out the one that ProTec makes. These things are actually made better and sturdier than the Hamiltons, even the older model Hamiltons!

When folded is the protec stand as short as the hamilton?

It looks like the legs simply swing down, where the hamilton fold and end up no longer than the body of the stand.

I'm just wondering about how it would fit in the case.

I'll have to do a "fold down" test, interesting point. To be honest with you , I never took one out on a gig.

To answer your question, there's a thumb screw at the base. Once un-loosened, the vertical tube slides downward through the base, then the legs fold. I'll have to do a total fold-up and compare the overall length to a Hamilton's overall length in the fold position. I will say that the ProTecs are heavier than a Hamilton, thus more sturdier. There's nothing cheap about them. It always amazes me that people buy the best horn out there, spending big $$, then they go and buy a cheap and poorly made stand. Go figure? If you're gonna have a nice horn, better trust & support it with a good quality stand.

I think one of the reasons people don't buy the best product, not including price, is that many stores don't carry a diverse range of products.

My local musical instrument stores don't carry a lot of selection.

I was unaware that there were options beyond protec and hamilton.

and also not all sites carry a wide selection....for instance if I want a trumpet stand I go to wwbw. If I want a leather specialties valve guard with the 3rd slide cover I have to go to osmuns because wwbw doesnt carry that version. and none of which carry that protec stand Lon posted. I wish one site had just everything I need. wwbw is very close but if they added a few more things to their inventory they would probably be the top internet site to go to for musical supplies...(if they arent already now)

It is very nice having the internet stores, but for some items I really want to be able to try it out before buying.

Unless it was recommended to me, a trumpet stand would fall into that category.

BTW, I do understand, and sympathize with, why stores don't carry large amounts of stock.

I can't tell from the pictures, but which one takes less room when fully opened?
In my band room, I sit on a tier and there's limited space to put things on the floor. It's probably a foot or a foot and a half square.

The 5 legged K&M does not take up much room at all... maybe a little less than the Hamilton.

OK folks, the "Fold Down Test" was done tonight!

The ProTec folded completely down measures 17 3/4-inches in length.
Also, when it's set up ready for use, it has some vertical adjustment to it as well. It can go up to 25-inched high (measured from the floor to the tip of rubber snubber). It also has a vertically adjustable bell plunger support, too.
Sorry, I forgot to measure the leg spread on the ProTec. However, guessing, I'd say it's about the same as the Hamilton.

The Hamilton (older model with thumb screw on the retractable legs) folds completely down to measure 14 1/2-inches in length. It stands 15-inches high (measured from the floor to the tip of rubber snubber). The leg spread is 12 1/2".

In regard to the ProTec: save your money.
I have/had the 5-legged K&M, the Hamilton, and briefly, the ProTec. I was disappointed with the "engineering" of the latter. Heavy, clumsy, and ill-conceived, with adjustments that do not work well, I sold it. The 5-legged K&M is supreme for some applications, the Hamilton, for others. ProTec did not find a niche. The "el cheapo" black plastic stands are superior to the ProTec in some situations. As mentioned by others, the Hamilton trombone stand is the best of all worlds, especially for those who stand for performances.
Great products, generally, but ProTec disappointed me with this entre.

I use a Hamilton most of the time, which is very sturdy and the base width is good. I also recommend checking out the Manhasset Stand-In if you're interested in a stand that stores in the instrument bell - its tri-leg base width is good as well.
