|
|
Does anyone know where to buy the rubber water key pads that have the nipple that protrudes into the hole, whereby making the inside of the leadpipe flush? I have looked in the usual places, but to no avail. A horn that I just bought had one installed, but is in need of replacement. It seems like "sound" thinking, especially if you read much of Ren Schilke's writing. Thanks, in advance, for your help. _________________ Sparks in Daytona

My guess would be to ask the local repair guys - in theory they should be available from Yamaha - they used to be fitted as standard on Yamaha pro instruments. |

If i know what you're talking about, just get your local repairman to put some cork in the water keys instead? My "nippled water pads" came loose and fell out during a gig, so I got some cork! _________________ Yamaha 6310Z - 14B4

I always thought that that "nipple" formed on it's own, over time, from the pressure exerted by the spring. I've never seen a new one with that shape to it. |

Thanks; I will pursue the Yamaha angle.
Tootsall: These have a definitive nipple that's a couple of millimeters long, enough to fill the entire water key "channel". Wouldn't surprise me if they came very long, and one had to cut them down to the correct length, to prevent protrusion into the tuning slide.
Any more insights out there on where to find them is welcomed; Thanks! _________________ Sparks in Daytona

Steve... please do let us know when you find one: it sounds like an obvious means to at least partially solve a problem that some attribute to the design of the lever-type water key.
I know that the pad on the octave key of my daughter's tenor sax requires replacement about every year or so because it develops the "bump" and starts to crack and leak air. I've got a pretty strong spring on the water key lever of my Schilke right now so I'll be watching it to "see what develops" over time! |

I have no need for a nipple. I just soak my cork. |

I love nipples! Big ones and small ones. If u soak them they are still good. Fat ones and skinny ones are also good!

Yes,
Yamaha will sell them to you or via your local repair shop. The order number is A3941180 and is called a water key rubber. It will fit most horns but not Schilkes. They take smaller ones. I use them on most of my overhauls/rebuilds but make sure the water key is lined up right or the nipple will not locate properly and/or jam up. Also, the rubber is quite hard so if it does not hit the nipple square on it may leak. _________________ www.willspencer.org

Will - the problems of hard nipples eh?
In serious mode - if you have any of those lying around, can you bring a couple along on Wednesday? |

I was wondering how many posts it would take before somebody twisted the "nipple" thing..............................
I used to have a Yamaha 6345, and that horn did play better with a "nippled" rubber water key pad..........
Now I play
Scodwell horns which have Amados, so I need to remember to put a drop of valve oil in the Amado every few days.
OMG.........I said "nippled" and "rubber" in the same sentence.
