Can you folks recommend reasonably priced (say, around $30) electronic metronomes and tuners?
Should these be purchased separately? Are both available in one unit?
Thanks in advance for you help. _________________ Tim Murtaugh

I like the little Korg units. The Seiko units are also nice. I did not care for the Qwik units. Be sure you get a loud met! I prefer tuners with meters, but they cost more. The little ones with "hi/lo" lights are nice.
Combined units are pricey, generally at the upper end (more like $150 to $200 for a good one), but that may be just the ones I was looking at? I use a Boss DB-88 met (~$125, I think) and older Boss chromatic tuner (~$100). At that time (about five years ago) there were no combined units with anywhere near the feature set of those two separate units. You have to decide if convenience is worth giving up features -- sometimes it is!

I use a Dr. Beat DB 88 also, and love it. It's more than $30 by a long shot, but it's LOUD, can be amplified, has chromatic pitch reference beginning at C2 up to B6, offers beat subdivisions of 2, 3, and 4, can be set to measure lengths of 1-8 beats, can combine those for asymmetric emphasis, has programmable memory of up to 8 programs and does a very nice immitation of Richard Simmons. It's also great for abusing students who didn't practice or when the band can't quite stay in time. If you can, save a little longer and hold out for this little gem of a tool. |

An effective tuner can be purchased from Korg in your price range. Refer to sites such as the Woodwind/Brasswind or Giardinelli. Metronomes, on the other hand, are a different story. My advice is to bite the bullet and spend the extra money for a Boss DB-88. The Doctor is the simply the best metronome available. There is no substitute for the wonderful features it has. You can program in several measures with varying meters in order to practice pieces that have changing time signatures, etc. This is very helpful in practicing contemporary literature. Also, it's very loud. Trumpet is loud. If you want to hear your metronome, you need a loud one. You may be able to find one cheaper on eBay. Incidentally, I just purchased a Sony ECM-DS907 Stereo Microphone on eBay for $76 after shipping. It was brand new, in the box, and included all warranties. This microphone, which can be used with MiniDisc and DAT recorders, retails for $99. I'd give eBay a shot for any music-related electronics purchases. |

I've got a korg ma 30 which is great. placed infront of you on a music stand it's plenty loud enough - and anyway, it's got a visual display too. |

Here are a couple options for you:
This might be the best solution,
http://store.musicbasics.com/t-wmt-120-black.html
If you need to save a couple bucks,
http://store.musicbasics.com/t-wmt-555c-black.html
Both of these are tuners/metronomes. They have input for clip on mic and also earpiece output. The first one includes both the second, only the cip on mic.
If you dont want to have an earpiece in while you practice, you could go for the Seiko clip on metronome. Clip it on your collar below your ear and you cant miss the tick tick of tempo.

If you really want to go small, Go for the Korg mini- "MetroGnome" mm-1. it is small and hangs in your ear:
Many years ago, Casio made a watch with a metronome. I still use that now. |
