Anyone that describes the Arban's "Carnival of Venice" with all variations(?) as not "too bad" has far more skills than I because I never got to the point where I could play all variations with ease. My hat is off to you.

If you want a really hard book that would take you more than a year to perfect, that book is 'Vassily Brandt's Etudes for Trumpet (Orchestra Etudes and Last Etudes)'. I've had this book for 2 weeks, and I'm still trying to critique and perfect the 1st etude! This whole book is full of some of the hardest etudes.

I have to echo Ryan on this one. The Brandt studies are extremely challenging. Hey Ryan, its good to know that I'm not the ONLY one STILL trying to perfect the first etude! Although this one is not "Technical", I'd also like to put my bid in for the Concone Lyrical Studies. Beautiful and yet extremely challenging stuff!

I just got finished going through the Brandt book and it was tough, but alot of fun too. Something that is posing more difficulty for me is the Bousquet.....The thing is when I bought it I ordered it online and they sent me the book for tuba, I read bass clef pretty well, but not when stuff is going down 4 ledger lines and going by as fast as your eyes can follow it. But anything I have come across lately that is bass clef seems like a joke compared to this.

Check out Allen Vizzuti's Carnival of Venus. The opening lick goes to double C and there is an insane amount of large interval double tongueing.

I was taking a picc lesson about a month ago and mentioned to my prof. that I had been reading in either the Webster or Hickman books that they recommended doing the Clarke Technical Studies using the 3,4,5th fingers instead of the normal 2,3,4th. I asked him if he felt this would be useful for developing strength in the 5th finger for the 4th valve on the picc. He asked me "Oh you mean like this" and proceeded to start ripping off the excercises in the first and second study from memory using the 3,4,and 5th fingers at marked max tempo and beyond. I was of course amazed especially when he mentioned that the Mendez version of "Carnival of Venice" was much harder. Mendez version I asked ? Yea - you know the one finger version - and he proceeded to play the one finger Mendez version of "Carnaval of Venice" at full clip from memory. Unbelievable !!! Give the Clarke studies a try sometime with the alternate fingering if you really want to see what hard is.

There's a piece called "Space is a Diamond" by Lucia Dlugosiewski (unsure of spelling) that was recorded by Gerard Schwarz in the 1970's. I think a reissue is available. The music was published by Margun and may or may not be out of print.

Anyway, this is the most amazingly impossible piece I've ever heard a trumpeter play. I can't even describe it. Try to listen to it if you can find it, or check a University music library for the music.

I'll say! The hymn at the end of the 3rd Mvt should have it's name changed from 'All Men Must Die' to 'All Trumpeters will want to die after playing this.'

My vote is for the Maxwell Davies Sonata, what a bear!

Another one that is challenging, although for different reasons is 'Solus' by Stan Freidman. Playing the notes (and the grunts and squeals, and a movement without your 2nd valve slide in) is one thing.... finding and then communicating the music is another.

I did both the Hindemith and 'Solus' on a recital when I was in University. Shouldn't have put the Hindemith last, but hindsight is 20/20 right?
