|
|
Hi Everyone,
I currently play a standard Bach 37 ML Bb trumpet and have been looking to switch to something different for a while now. I want to get a large bore Bb from a top quality maker (I'm tired of going from one Bach to another and they're way different). I play mostly classical solo/quintet with my Bb and need a free-blowing, even horn with an open upper register. I don't want it to be too bright like a lead horn obviously. Something that would sound fine in quintet and on the Stevens/Hindemith Sonata.
So...what brands would be worth investigating? I've been very interested in the new Lawler Model T. Would this horn be along the lines of what I want? Any other ones to think about?
Thanks in advance for your knowledge! |

Well trumpets you could try out at MR. E's or Brook Mays would be....
Yamaha Xeno
Conn Vintage 1
and then bach but you obviously do not desire one.
But off the top of my head I can ony think of those two unless you dig deeper.
Stromvis are very good as well....my lesson teacher played in a Orch for 20+ on a Stronvi.
Good luck,

I dont think that those are TOP brand trumpets.
I think what you can get is an Eclipse, Destino, or MONETTE _________________

I'll put up a controversial choice.
Kanstul Chicago MLP with a suitable mouthpiece. Let's not forget that these horns (I'm refering to the Chicago Benges) were originally designed and made as trumpets to be used first and foremostly in a classical environment just because they light up when you step on the gas is a bonus. If you wan't to spend a little more money Roy Lawler's TLBC really appeals..would love to try one.
Just a different angle.
Regards,
Trevor |

From what you said it sounds like you are bored with your horn and don't really need another horn...you just want one...just like most of us .
Now that that is out of the way I would like to suggest a few other horns. I don't think there is only one "magic trumpet" that you will be able to bond with but actually quite a few. Past and present horns that I have been able to bond with are Calicchio R32, this is by far my favorite for it's rich mature sound, ease of playing (range and flexability) and feel..the one down side is the ML , a 0.460", plays like a large bore which is too much for me over the long haul. The next favorite is my Getzen Renaissance which is similar to the Calicchio except it has a smaller, brighter sound and is quite playable for long periods of time, I have used this horn in orchestras where it is a little darker than Bach 239s and has a much fuller presence. The third is probably an LA CG Benge, a very mellow horn which can be used for any work it has a very sweet and pleasing sound.
Why are you after a large bore? If your 37 is just a little tight there are numerous freer blowing ML horns out there which can make you happy. Good luck! _________________ Mark LaSavio

I have to agree, if you're looking for that Bach 72 Strad set-up, check out the Kanstul 1504. Also, a step beyond that would be a Kanstul Model 1600 "WB", which is a Bach 72 but with a tweaked leadpipe.
Either way, you not only got to try these out, but any brand for that matter. These suggestions are just "base line" ideas where to start. You have to get out there, or have them sent to you for a trail period, and give them a good run threw.
Where and how to start looking for a new horn can be a difficult thing. You have to ask yourself, "What is that I don't like about my current horn right now?". Also, ask yourself, "What is it that I want the new one to sound like?". Sometimes it not always that a new horn holds the answer. Sometimes it is an equipment change that is the answer, (i.e. new mouthpiece ... cup or backbore change, tuning slide configuration, leadpipe, etc....).
By the way, THANKS WFUnix for the plug!!

I would say the new Getzen 900 classic. I may have to get one of those... may be one of the best deals out there. _________________ DCB <><

You simply cannot go wrong with the Lawler. I have yet to play a better sounding horn. _________________ "Your mind is your kingdom; that's where you exist" |

Well. This is essentially what I was asking in my post, so maybe I'll just abandon it and add on here.
Any thoughts on the Getzen Genesis? I know Tom (Jazz-Player-Collector) may he rest in peace, said that if he had to keep one of his horns and abandon the others it would be his Genesis, even over his Monettes, Eclipses, Blackburns, and Taylors. |

Thanks for all of your thoughts! I really appreciate it. I've ordered a Lawler Model T in silver plate to be delivered in early Jan '05. The only thing I'm worried about is that it will be too bright to play in the settings I am in normally. But, I play pretty dark naturally and on a Bach 1 mouthpiece, so it should work out. I've heard nothing but great things about the Model T. |

In my humble opinion all of the above mentioned brands are all great horns, and all can be great all around trumpets. It'll be up to the player if he knows the proper feel for a certain type of music. You already have a good horn? But it's nice to have a new horn. _________________ Playing music is better than playing notes!

Hi Ntlead:
Just thought I would make a slight correction to your post. I recall reading "Jazz-Player-Collector's" message and I believe he was referring to his Edwards Gen X. Having played both, I can tell you that there is a significant difference, with major kudos due for the Edwards Gen X. |
