As I suspected, it's the ol "market share" bugaboo. This is why Toyoto, Nissan, Mercedes, BMW, VW, etc. all have plants in the USA and/or latin America.

Yes, its about maintaining a foothold in a currently hostile market.
Hopefully the market will change in the future and those who have stuck with it will reap the benefits.
The other thing we try and do is source supplies in the US where we can in order to benefit from some cost savings on the exchange rate the other way.
My understanding is that the margin on a Bach Strad in the UK is about £50 for a local dealer if they are going to compete with the big dealers like Myatt and John Packer.
AT that level its barely worth selling any or stocking them. _________________ Bb - Scherzer 8218W, Schilke S22, Bach 43, Selmer 19A Balanced

Oh, do I run the risk of ticking people off with this or what? But, as a business owner, here's an interesting take on this thread's recent comments:
1. What countries do you think have, overall, the highest "standard" of living on the planet?
2. Would we all live at the same "standard" or in the same conditions in other countries if we did the same job "there" that we do here?
3. Would we expect that "frivolities" (don't kill me, I know, to many of us a trumpet is not a "frivolity", but it's not food and shelter either often), to cost more or less in countries with "higher" standard of living?
Ok......let 'er rip on me, I suppose.....(author braces for attack). _________________ '78 Bb Bach Strad 180-37

Not sure, but the standard of living for the average working poerson in the UK and US seems to be about the same.
Certainly peoples homes are to a similar standard and they seem to have similar material posessions (apart from the guns!). _________________ Bb - Scherzer 8218W, Schilke S22, Bach 43, Selmer 19A Balanced

Hi
I played principal cornet in an English champioship band for several years.
I used either :-
Bach Strad short model cornet model 184 large bore.
Besson sovereign large bore short model cornet
Yamaha Maestro large bore
The Bachand te Besson were beautiful!!
Try searching for Besson Sovereign cornets also on www.ebay.co.uk and even an lod sovereign was a good player
kind regards

Oh, good. Looks like you didn't take my comment to be directed at UK. I was specifically talking about the relationship between countries with specifically "lower" standards of living, and the effect that might have on prices. That was all. Looks like I'm off the hook (I hope). _________________ '78 Bb Bach Strad 180-37

I think that in poorer countries you just don't find top brand trumpets on sale.
I might be wrong, but in the old days of Eastern Europe that was the case. Now there are even Schilke dealers in places like Poland. This shows the economic improvements.
I don;t know about Africa, but India certainly does a huge trade in trumpets _________________ Bb - Scherzer 8218W, Schilke S22, Bach 43, Selmer 19A Balanced
