Nice horn pics, by the way! - when my parents buy a digital camera (I live in Maine; it's practically still the stone age here) I'll post pics of my horn. It's not as shiny (mostly because of the satin finish), new and expensive as all those above, but it's pretty none the less.

Well that didn't work out so good.

Maybe I was a little too close? How do you adjust the size of the picture?

Trian and error is so much fun :(

Here's another attempt.......

Left to right,
Silver WT (the absolute best horn ever, I will never let go of it!!!!)
Bach 196 piccolo (for sale in marketplace and on eBay)
Gold WT (will probably sell in a few months, great horn, but I just like the silver one better)
Laying down in front, 6310ZS (also for sale in marketplace and eBay)

Why are the receivers on your two WTs different?

Good catch, what an eye for detial! Here's what I know about it. The silver one was a very early one. In fact it was the 8th WT made, around 1995. The gold one is newer. The gold one was made around 1999. I bought both of them used, but am of the understanding that they were not modified by the previous owners. The pictures on the website show the hex, ala Bach-like receivers. I don't know if the pipes are different or just the receivers. This may account for some of the diference in feel between the two.

Take care,

Why do you hate Schilke?

The owner of that satin-gold Schilke is a (or was a) frequent poster here on TH...

I hate schilke because:
1. I have played numerous mps and they all bottom out
2. All the freshman trp players in my marhcing band have a 14a4a and they al sound like crap
3.never played on a schilke trumpet

I have heard there trumpet are good but have never had the chance to play on one. So I will not say anything bad about their trumpets. Their mps however suck the big one.

Hi,

Reading your post about freshmen and marching band, I assume you are either in high school or college marching band . . . probably high school.

Don't diss the mouthpieces too much yet. Over time you may discover that you can play the shallow mouthpieces! I'm telling you this because this same thing happened to me many years ago and I'll tell you what's happening.

People bottom out on a mouthpiece usually when they spread their chops apart and open the aperture up too much to either produce more "volume" or try to "open up" the tone.

When one blows their chops apart it takes more and more pressure to produce the notes . . . and the later the gig goes the more pressure is needed. Eventually the player crashes and burns.

Another result of spread chops is that the player chips a lot of notes and plays a lot of "air balls" (when they blow but no note comes out. Also, attacks come late sometimes as the player tries to get the note out . . . somehow, some way.

It takes a LOT more air to keep the chops together in the center and allow the compression to occur from lip against lip vs. mashing the chops against the teeth. The results, once mastered, are limitless endurance, an extra octave or so of usable range, beautiful, consistent tone . . . you get the picture!

Lots of people play Schilke mouthpieces that are very shallow and still get a huge, fat sound. One that comes to mind is Bob Odneal, Callet Artist and former Maynard alumni. Bob plays a Schilke 6A4a and yet you'd swear it was a huge, deep mouthpiece as he effortlessly plays up and down, and up again from the petals to the triples and back again.

Don't give up on the mouthpieces. They don't suck at all if the player plays correctly.

You are right though that they can sound very shrill and ugly if they are played by tired HS Freshmen who are "poking and hoping" and who haven't developed serious chops yet.

I encourage you to keep on practicing, and find a great private teacher. I assure you, in time, and with serious practicing, that you can master the horn!

Good luck!

Tom

I am one of the two main guys in marching band. I like a mp that is VERY forgiving. Schilkes do not provide that. It feels that I am some how contained within the mp. I would say that I have larger than average lips and need something I can blow on. Shew 1's and Shew 1.5's offer that support I need. But that is not only on shallow mps. Then again, It is all in the player. I am the only one in my band of 30 trumpets that can play Marcinkiewicz(sp?) lead pieces. I have seen people play well on Schilke. They don't work well for me. Sorry if I offended any Schilke loyalist

Enjoy. As you can tell I'm not Mr. Cosmetic Perfection. The Meha is a new aquisition and that will be getting a little re-finish time though.

This is pretty funny.

And yes, it does have something to do with trumpets.

If the picture is a html TH will post the link to the website. You need to have the picture in .jpeg or .gif(Not sure??) fo the img button to work. Size had nothing to do with it. As you could see from the previous pictures there were some that were quite large.

I have a serious question for all.

What is everyone's favorite finish? Whether it's Brushed copper? or Satin gold? Or silver with Gold Trime?

Oh yeah and why?

Going strictly on aesthetics, my favorite finish is a 24K satin gold (which, incidently, has ALWAYS been my favorite finish), but when it comes to down to what's important (i.e., response and sound) my favorite is the brushed lacquer. I get a warmer soound with lacquer and I love the fact that I don't have to worry about tarnish. My silver Canadian Brass trumpet has NEVER been polished, even though I am a nut about maintaining my instrument - weekly cleanings and all that. At this point it has a gunmetal blue hue everywhere except where I touch it that actually looks pretty cool in the right light. In the wrong light (which is most of the time) it looks like a disgusting hunk of silver that was dug up from a tomb. But it is actually a mint instrument...not a scratch, dent or ding anywhere.

Maybe when I have the cash to spend I can have Kanstul whip up a WB1600 with a clear satin lacquer over 24K satin goldplate for me, if that's possible. Or maybe they can give that same treatment to my Canadian Brass CB10 before I save up the cash....
