Are there any certain horns that sound really nice for jazz work? _________________ "Behold, I make all things new."- Jesus Christ, God Almighty

The only horn appropriate for jazz is a Bach Strad.

Be careful with the Bach..sometimes you'll be in the middle of a jazz thing, and then BAM..oout comes this whimpy classical sound..yuck.and there is nothing you can do about it. The darn horn has a mind of it's own! |

I think the chief was kidding, but as for horns for jazz any horn really will do for jazz, you make the horn sound what it sounds like, the horn only does something to a certain extent. But if you are only playing jazz you might as well make it easier and pick a horn "for" jazz so that eliminates some of the work you would have to do to "make" a horn sound "jazzy". If you are a jazz soloist pick a horn that is heavier or "darker" sounding, a horn with a round open sound, as for lead a lighter horn is preferred by most to allow you to "cut through" the band. Bach's are pretty much standard but not the only choice. Try Schilke or Kanstul, Conn V1 are good, just try a lot of horns, and i mean A LOT!! You can play jazz on anything if you try! Sorry if some of this made no sense, it was mostly rambling. _________________ -Jim

While there is no such thing as a "jazz" horn, The large bore Martin Committees are more associated with jazz that any other horn. Mostly because a large amount of jazz greats played on one. _________________ N.Y. Bach 31 bell S-bore (.440) 50XX, Bob Reeves 41sv-692s, Bach MV 1.5C/warburton 9 BB for legit.
