They also addressed this at camp. They talked about how you have to have the beat going so strongly in your head that you cant get lost. He started counting in 4/4 then told half of us to keep counting silently and then he talked to the rest of the band, sang and played a little then came back to us and gave us a couple of measures in exact time that he had left us with. _________________ Andrew Fowler

Hey man, I have found transcribing solos to be the single most helpful aspect to my jazz practicing.
You dont have to write down the notes, try learning the solo on the piano and then playing it on the horn, this way you can really understand how the music works.
Transcribing really helps your ear, allows you to understand how solos are constructed, what scale degrees perform what function and how you can use the notes to produce the sound you want.
ITS AMAZING.

If you need to learn more about chords, take a theory or harmony course... or both, while you're at it... it's the most useful thing you can do to learn about chord structures.
