I'm wondering if anyone else has run into this. I have a horn up in the marketplace and got responses from two people saying that they have a client who owes them $3,000, and they want the client to give me the $3,000, and expect me to return the change with the horn. I'm not sure how this could be rigged in their favor, since with both of them I would be getting the money first, but to have 2 people make the exact same bizarre request seems very suspicious.
Thanks,

Don't fall for it. It's a scam. They've tried to get me twice.

Mike,
Thanks. Do you know how the scam works?

I think that the scam is like this. The buyer's "agent" sends you a cashiers check, usually from another country. You deposit it and the bank doesn't realize that the check is bad until they try to get the funds from the other bank. This makes it seem like it is a valid cashiers check for a couple of weeks, long enough for you to wire funds to the scammer, oh and send them a trumpet, too. |

Here is an email I just got from a interested buyer who is in Spain. Sounds similar to the scams I've seen on ebay but I did reply back with some degree of courtesy.''
Mr. Badejo,
I will only use Paypal for those out of the US. I am very suspicious of your email and will forward your name to the TH site so others are aware of your dealings. I appreciate your inquiry.

Here's the story of a man who fell for a similar scam that's being pulled here.

I would be nearly certain that this is a scam.
When in doubt, always use an internet escrow service, such as the one we have listed on our ads:
Quote: | Notice: trumpetherald.com recommends the use of an escrow service such as www.escrow.com for safe internet transactions |
Anybody that asks you to send them cash and the merchandise has to be immediately considered to be suspicious.

I have received about 10 of these scams in the last month or so. The local police, in their typical lazy fashion, won't follow up on them unless you are dumb enough to get burned by it. |

I got the same one from Johnny Badejo that Woo did. Maybe I'll screw around with him and the other guy.

It might not even be a person doing it. It might just be software that automatically finds these auctions and sends them this email.

I got one too. In my response I suggested we put a 100 year hold on the cashiers check......................
Thus far I have received bogus cashiers checks from three scammers in the last eight months. (I also invited one of the guys to meet me at a bar in Madrid for a wild evening on the town. Wonder if he showed up)
The issuing banks have been real but the checks and account #'s are poor forgeries. The bank in New Jersy seems especially interested in pursuing these characters through the FBI.
The odds of catching one of these guys is very small.
Best advise?
Just delete them and move on. |
