I have a two rim answer:
I love Monette 1-5 rims. Have used them for more than 20 years, love the feel, love the sound, love the comfort and the flexibility they allow, and the sound I create using them. Just enough inner edge, just enough rim contour.
The other rim I LOVE is the Yamaha John Wallace Signature series mouthpiece, which is not (as far as I can tell) made anymore. It is just comfortable, easy to play, and feels great. I found one by accident, found a new one on eBay, and have the two. I wish I could find a couple more brand new ones!

After reading an interview with Maynard in Downbeat back in the 70's I asked Scott Laskey at Schilke to make a custom rim that was flatter then their 5 rim. Maynard said he did not want anything sharp or round against his face. I have custom flat rims with a very subtle high spot toward the inside edge on all my pieces.
I also asked Terry Warburton to make several tops with my rim.
So, I guess the most comfortable rim I play is both mine and Schilke Inc.

I haven't tried that many different makes, but everything got a touch easier and more comfortable for me when I switched from Bach to Curry. _________________ CarolBrass 658R Bb | CarolBrass 506R Bb | CarolBrass 4000 C | Yamaha 631GS Flugel | CarolBrass 6882T Bb Cornet | Besson 60MD D/Eb | CarolBrass 7770F Picc. | Curry & Reeves mpcs

I found Austin Custom Brass's TA-1 to be very comfortable.
As far as Bach goes, I really only use stuff that's pre Mt. Vernon because I prefer to have that "bite".
And I highly recommend GR. _________________ http://onlinejazzclass.com |

The Yamaha Vizzutti is the most comfortable rim I have ever played. I like it so much that I put it on my Flugel and Orchestral piece too.
I have tried many pieces, but this rim just works great for me. _________________ Bb 8310Z

I like the old Jet Tone Studio series rims. Not sure if the New Age Jet Tones are the same... _________________ Larry Pfeifer |

Most comfortable rim for me is a tie between my Bob Reeves 43C and the copy of Arturo Sandoval's Mt Vernon 3C Jim New at Kanstul made for me. The Reeves is a little easier and stronger sounding in the upper register, mainly because it is slightly smaller in diameter (and the cup is a little shallower as well). The MV3C clone is a little easier in terms of clean articulations when playing fast and/or softly, and easier and stronger on extreme low notes, mainly because it is a little bigger in diameter (and the cup is also a bit deeper). Interestingly, though the Reeves is smaller and shallower, listeners out front claim the MV3C sounds brighter. They're both wonderful. I know I should choose just one, but I can't break it off with the other...
P.S. After posting the above, I wanted to take part in the survey but didn't see the "vote" button (or whatever it's called). I then realized I must have already voted. And it turns out, not only did I already vote, but I already posted a reply in this thread more than five years ago! It's interesting to see my answer then was pretty similar to my answer now. Where as back then I was occasionally cheating on my 43C with another Reeves mouthpiece, now I'm cheating on it with a different one. I'm lucky my faithful 43C doesn't dump me. Maybe she doesn't know. Don't tell her. |

even because this is an old thread from 2014....
the most comfortabel rim is one that has no rim at all: MF convex v-cup....amen!
The only question ist: who is able to play such a thing?
The next question ist: how long did one try to decide to be able or not?
The next question ist: what was the attitude in doing so - conventional or open minded? |

Hey shak, check out the Jet-Tone chart I posted in our other thread. I hope you didn't mind my good natured 'ribbing' - I figured you knew I play all the so-called 'cheater' pieces out there and it would be ok
It took me right around 3 months to be able to perform on the MF Jet-Tone. One of the reasons I did it was because I felt it would help my efficiency as a player. And I feel it did. I think a lot of the MF style rims are very comfortable. I have thin lips and somewhat wider rims with a softer bite are what feels the most comfortable for me. I am a big believer in the Storks' philosophy on mouthpiece choice. I can play any type of mouthpiece of any depth, but I definitely get my biggest, fattest sound usually on diameters from .610-.630. If I go bigger, I lose focus to my sound and range. If I go smaller, I lose width of sound. There are some exceptions, but this is typically true for me. On the diameter range I like in my mouthpiece, I have the same range and endurance whether it's on a deep flugel piece or a shallow lead piece. Of course I play these pieces for the purposes which they are intended. I don't try to play lead type of stuff on my deep V trumpet mouthpiece or try to make my lead piece give a dark, smoky jazz sound. I bought a new Jet Tone Maynard mouthpiece just to try it and I still try it periodically just to affirm that I can't play it at all LOL. At my age I'm not going to dedicate any number of months learning to play it either although I'm just a hobbyist. Currently I play mostly lead on a Warburton 6SW and it is very comfortable. FWIW. _________________ Scott |

I've been playing the Legend's JT-CS .590 off and on for about 3 years now and, FOR ME, it has the most comfortable rim I have ever played on!!! In fact, I can feel myself gravitating back to this piece and using it full time. I'm usually a one mouthpiece guy and this piece seems to allow me to play just about any style of music with good results.
