I can do an excellent growl in the middle and low register of my horn by humming. But when I get to a high G (sits on staff) and I try to growl all it does is goes flat. I've heard people growl on High C's, so I know it is possible.
Thanks,
Ben Love |

Youve got a great radio name.
You have to focus your air more, really take a breath and let it out, instead of humming try making a gaging sound, like your choking, just keep working on it and you will get it, it's kind of one of those jazz ornaments thats hard to describe how to do. |

Thanks a lot. I just tryied what you said and it worked, but i gagged afterwards. I guess it is one of those things i have to get used to.

How much of a difference does it actually make to the sound whether you growl from your throat or flutter tongue?

It depends...I think it's called a growl for a reason... it sounds better when you actually growl in your throat and you have more control over what you are doing and it just sounds more authentic. In my opinion don't flutter tounge. |

They sound different, and they are very different to execute. DWM described it as best as I would, but using the growl CAN be hard on your voice. Ever notice how Wynton always seems to be whispering after a gig he's been growling on? I think those Lincoln Center cats have the best growl sounds... check out 'Big Train' by LCJO. Tons of growling goin on. _________________ Nicholas Dyson

Your lips have to be really close together and focussed to do it high. _________________ Regards, Roddy o-iii

Flutter toungeing to growl is a much to "caucasian" way of doing it . It is much to structured to sound good. I either growl, or act like i'm hawking up some snot. Sorry for the grossness, but it works. _________________ Richard |

I figured that's what you had to do... but every time I try to actually growl I start gagging and coughing, and that's not pretty either. What do you do to stop that, or do I just have to grin and bear it until I get more used to it?

Growl without your horn, like you are a dog defending it's food....erghhhhh......does that make you choke or gag? Now, work with it and apply it to your horn, you shouldn't be choking anymore, use alot of air... focused and fast. Hope this helps. |
