Well, it's not really about "valve use" at all. It's a novel approach to developing a true legato - something which trumpet tone benefits greatly from.
It's a confusing notion to some, since we have it drilled in our heads to "slam" valves down. Friedman is not saying you should forget your technique - just that trying this exercise will show you some things about what your air does when you play, what bad habits you might have, etc.
Friedman is never afraid to approach something from an angle no one else has thought of. If we compare what he says literally with what our teachers have told us, it might seem contradictory. But the essence of his advice is of real interest to me, and of inestimable value in my opinion. Once you grasp what he's getting at, it makes perfect sense. |
