Hello everyone.
I am interested in taking on a couple of students this summer, and my guess is that I'll get some beginners. My question is, seeing as reading music is a very important skill to have, how should I go about teaching this? If anyone has any tips for me, that would be wonderful. Thanks!!!

Matt

Karl Sievers has some good comments here: http://www.bachbrass.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=38

In a nutshell, learn to sing everything. Learn to recognize patterns of rhythm and pitch. Learn the sound first and then learn to associate that sound with the way it is notated.

At my last lesson with Adam he pulled out the first Getchell book. I hadn't been working on transposing to all keys as I should and he got on my butt pretty hard about it. He did this by telling a story of a lesson with Jerry Hey. Jerry hadn't been doing his singing and transposing of the Getchells and Mr. Adam suggested that if Jerry didn't want to do the assignment, perhaps he could get him into the studio of one of the other trumpet teachers at IU. I got the message. Seeing the dots on the page as sounds is how you learn to read and the best way to learn to see the dots as sound is to sing. The same way you learn a language. No instrument to rely on other than your own mind.

Wow guys, thanks!
That really does make a lot of sense. And Billy, that story has convicted me to get out my getchell and get cracking on my singing...I must confess that I haven't been doing as much as I should despite the fact that I know it will pay off .

Thanks again for the input!
